Title: EP Flash: Betting the Family Farm
Post by: Russell Nash on May 19, 2009, 02:33:32 PM
EP Flash: Betting the Family Farm (http://escapepod.org/2009/05/19/escape-pod-flash-betting-the-family-farm/)

By Wenonah Lyon (http://wenonahlyon.com/WenonahsLobby/Wenonahs_Lobby.html).
Read by Elie Hirschman (http://eliehirschman.com/).

It had originally thought the goal was to hit the two small creatures in the distance. They appeared to be identical to the three creatures whom he had joined in the game.

First approximation: separated by some distance, one attempts to down the group ahead of one using one of many metal-tipped sticks (called ‘clubs’) to ‘drive’ a small, hard ball. Those behind would, presumably, be attempting to hit one. So, one dodged and drove.

Rated PG. for frequent golf horror.

Okay. Neither great nor bad.

I thought this was pretty fun. I like the thought of the future of the world depending on a golf game. :)

I thought it was funny that a hustler was the one representing the whole world in the game. Someone tell me who won? I don't get it

the hustler won. Otherwise, the alien species would have taken over the earth. Instead it left :P

Hmm, that was the impression I had of it, but its been a while since I listened. I'll listen again.

Oh, you're right. The alien won, and the planet was then doomed.

But he was on government business while he was playing the game.  Therefore anything he acquires becomes the property of the government he's working for.

But he was on shore leave of sorts meaning that he had no orders that told him to try and take over the world, let alone win it in golf.

It reminds me of William Tenn's story (http://www.scifi.com/scifiction/classics/classics_archive/tenn/tenn1.html) "Bernie the Faust".  The two are very similar, though with somewhat different outcomes.

This made me giggle something terrible.  I liked the avoidance of 'literal metaphor' jokes and such, it was neat watching how canny the alien was even if our world IS doomed.

Well, higher stakes would definitely make the game more fun to watch!  :)

Legally, I doubt the golf player had any claim on the planet to give it up to the alien.  I mean, I can wager the Golden Gate bridge on a game of poker, but it doesn't mean that the other player actually gets to take it home with him if I lose.
