As I mentioned in EP099, we're kicking off our fantasy podcast in a few months and we need the right name. One of you has it. We're willing to bribe you for it.
The Rules:
- E-mail your name ideas to contest@escapepod.org. Posting them in this forum or anywhere else will not be valid.
- An eligible name must have the .org domain available. DO NOT register the domain yourself. You can check the Internet WHOIS service (http://www.internic.net/whois.html) to find out if a domain has been registered.
- Maximum one entry per person per day, please. (This rule is mostly because I don't want to have to read through pages of randomly generated names.)
- The first person to suggest the name I like best is the winner. I am the sole judge. There is no second prize.
- The contest ends at midnight PST on April 15, 2007.
The Prize:
A new 2 GB iPod Nano (http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/) with every Escape Pod episode preloaded on it. If you win, I'll contact you for inscription and delivery instructions. (So please make sure you send this from an e-mail address I can reach you at.)
Your e-mail address will not be retained for marketing or any other purposes. If you do not win, you will not be contacted. I'm not doing this to collect any sort of information from anyone; I really do just want a name for the fantasy podcast.
Any questions?
-
Will the fantasy podcast have the same pay rate as escape pod?
-
of course now I draw a blank, all I can come up with is the one for when you start a podcast about golden showers and other fetishes....Pee Pod :P
-
Will the fantasy podcast have the same pay rate as escape pod?
Yes.
Which is a risk, as our standard model is to start at a low rate and then scale up as that podcast's audience and donations warrant it. But since it's really targeting stories that up to now have been sent to Escape Pod, starting at a lower rate would essentially be cutting the rate, punishing authors for sending us fantasy. I don't want to do that.
We'll be doing what we can to make sure the new podcast starts at a healthy audience size, and we're also hoping to offer some interesting new incentives for donors. First things first, though. >8->
-
Oh, and a clarification: the new podcast does not need to have "Pod" in the name. It's fine if that's what you want to suggest, but it's not a gimmick we insist on, precedent notwithstanding. >8->
-
of course now I draw a blank, all I can come up with is the one for when you start a podcast about golden showers and other fetishes....Pee Pod :P
You could go witth Pea Pod a la Princess and her bed ;-) D'oh, now I can't use that one :P
-
If someone were to launch (ha ha) one about nautical adventures, they could call it "Sea Pod".

See Pod run. Run, Pod, run.
-
I would go with the most beloved of all fantasy themes, DragonPod.
-
For someone who's cynical about the validity of Fantasy as a worthwhile genre: Vay-Pod
-
Spellcast would be a good name, but the .org domain is registered (though there is no site actually there).

Those are both great names.
Y'all caught the part about having to e-mail them in, right?
-
No point if the .org isn't available.
-
i think the next step is a crime podcast, featuring lots of British policemen.
PLODPOD.
-
A podcast teaching you how to take care of your lawn- sodpod
A joint venture with Frank Key- oddpod
A fishing podcast- rodpod
Religious podcast- Godpod
Jewish religious podcast G-DP-D
A podcast dedicated to potatoes spudpod
Tips for doing up your home padpod
A horror podcast for sysadmins- sudopod
The tongue twister podcast- PeterPiperPickedAPeckOfPickledPeppersPod (I haven't checked, but I'll bet the .org is available)
-
A podcast about tentacled creatures - cephalopod
A podcast about the lowest form of humor - Punpod
A podcast about palindromes - Dopod
-
I think the one of the best names for this podcast is already taken by those Farpoint guys: The Dragon Page (http://www.dragonpage.com).
-
I would go with the most beloved of all fantasy themes, DragonPod.
I sent in that suggestion via email this morning before this post (the .org domain is still available) - but it got me to wonder how many repeats Steve will get in the mail.
With only one per person per day, I'm still sure he's going to get 50-100 a day, so it's too much to ask that he post them to see what's already been suggested - but is it possible to tell us the really really common ones, so we won't fill your inbox with "as wells".
I know DragonPod came to mind immediately for me (and I'm not all that sure I was the first), but I'll bet there's another 3-4 emails with the same idea by now.
-
Awww man, I though of dragonpod too last night. And I thought I was being original.
-
I can't think of a bloody thing. I searched dictionary.com for *pod, pod*, and *pod*. Arthropod, it opined. Theropod? No. No.
I think there's a mythical creature called an "onipod" or something, but that really won't do either. Does that name say fantasy to you? Me either.
On principle, I stand in opposition to DragonPod.
-
Okay, a group of whales is called a pod, right? So perhaps a grouping of some kind of mythical sea creature could also be referred to as a pod?
A Pod of Krakens, a Pod of Mermaids, a Pod of Sea Serpents, a Pod of Seasick Cecils... or, perhaps, not.
-
I thought I had it with Adventure Inn (Adventuring at the Adventure inn ;D) - but they are already taken - bah!
On principle, I stand in opposition to DragonPod.
Too obvious/common?
-
Steve, should we all be using the same exact subject header so that you can filter on them and weed out any spam?
-
Thieve's World, Discworld, PodWorld..
I didn't think of Dragonpod, because I thought everything with dragon was taken nine times over.
-
That's a good point - this is harder than I thought it would be - about half of what I think is cool is gone already. Thankfully .org is less consumed than .com - but still a good bunch of my ideas are already claimed...
-
On principle, I stand in opposition to DragonPod.
Too obvious/common?
Yes. And easy to mock.
-
I don't think the sheer cleverness of EscapePod can be replicated. Sci-fi relation, literary type, medium, double entendre all rolled into 9 letters.
I've been trying to use other common elements of S&S, and make them clever - like an Inn (hence the previously mentioned Adventure Inn).
Mr. Eley - In regards to the first "rule" (E-mail your name ideas to contest@escapepod.org. Posting them in this forum or anywhere else will not be valid.) Once they are emailed, is it alright to reveal our suggestions in the forum? We might get some neat synergy if we feed off each other's ideas...
-
About schools of dolphins - PodPod
About law enforcement officers - CopPod
About dealing with difficult situations - CopePod
About superheroes - CapePod
About super police officers - CapedCopsPod
About dealing with schools of super police - CopingWithCapedCopsPodPod
-
Anyone else notice that at the bottom of the whois link it states that the database only contains .com, .net, and .edu domains?
-
try this
networksolutions.com (http://networksolutions.com)
-
After long consideration (and dinner with Sarah Prineas), I have come to the not-so-sterling conclusion that my contest entry shall be:
PodQuest
which sounds vaguely like podcast.
-
OK. It looks like Podquest is owned by godaddy.com which appears, in turn, to be a web hosting service. Is that okay or not kosher?
(Also, in what possible circumstance other than this one is Podquest a good name to have? Who thought to buy that one up? Odd.)
Further, I officially declare Spellcast to be completely awesome.
-
alright - this is what I've sent in so far:
dragonpod
the magic inn
unreal places
corners of the world
-

I agree, and if the internet were a happy, fluffy place I'd be entirely in favour. Unfortunately there's a danger with this approach that I'm not going to state more explicitly in case it gives people evil ideas. I'd strongly recommend that contestants keep their suggestions private.
-
One of my first thoughts was dragonpod.org. In checking for availability, I see that Steve registered it a few days ago.

Does that mean he is going to use it?

Not necessarily. It just means he liked it enough to make sure no one else registers it. That doesn't mean he won't find one that he likes better. The contest is open until the 15th so there's plenty of time to find the one true gem that everyone will agree is the name for the new podcast.
-

Which makes sense -- although I don't personally like Dragonpod as a title, if it's what a significant portion of the population first thinks of when they think of "fantasy" + "podcast", then it's certainly got a branding advantage. Even if he selects a different name, he could always set up a redirect or advertisement on DP.

I agree, but to me "Dragonpod" sounds a lot like "Dragon Page".
-
Dragonpod was the first thing I thought of too. I would not complain if it were selected.
However, if you ever do a children's podcast, you really should consider the name "Podkayne" for Heinlein's Podkayne of Mars. The domains are wide open. The only drawback for that one is that it would be hard to spell, but otherwise it's perfect.
Hmm
-
My only submission was ThereBeDragonPod, meant to be vaguely illusory to the old "here be dragons" that apparently appears only once in cartography but takes up about 90% of the headspace for the here be ______ bit.
Sorry Palimpsest.
-
I did a couple of D&D spoofs.
-
Just out of interest, is anyone else finding WHOIS very very slow at the moment? I've not been able to get anything out of them for twenty four hours or so.
-

There have been a fair number of attacks directed at DNS in recent months, it could be that one's going on and they're choosing not to publicize it. Are you just using the link that Steve put or another service?
-
The link in the message which, oddly, is now working fine again. So now I feel slightly foolish:)
-
The Wonderful Wizard of Pod?
-
I thought I had a strong contender with Dragon's Hoard, but it was taken (however unused). This has been the case with many of my thoughts. It does get frustrating. I'm sure I'm not the only only one.
-
Steve, it would be interesting to see a list of unique suggestions when the contest is over.
For anyone who's interested, my suggestions so far have been:
Travelers' Tale Tavern
Pixie Pod
The Fire Swamp
Invisible Pink Unicorns
Escape To Fantasy
Some where more for humor, but most of my good ideas were taken.
Of course, with everyone else, my first obvious thought was Dragon Pod, which I suggested before there was even a contest, however I know that doesn't count.
-
I was leaning towards LegendPod but I suppose that wouldn't be imaginative enough. If anyone has a hundred-or-so old thesaurus, now is the time to pull it off the shelf!
-
I lied, one more entry: Once Upon A Pod (try saying it).
-
I lied, one more entry: Once Upon A Pod (try saying it).
That would be good for dinosaur stories. :P
-
A podcast with stories likely to involve castles?
Podcastle!
-
(The) Podio Forest
-
Hi everybody! I'm new to the forums, but I've really enjoyed listening to the podcast the past few months. My submissions:
"Once Upod a Time"
"Fairy Podmother"
I also had others, but they were kinda crap so I'm a little embarrassed to post them. :P
-
I only did one: Pod of Gold
-
I lied, one more entry: Once Upon A Pod (try saying it).
LOL...I submitted Once Upon A Podcast
Additionally PodTales and TalePod
-
I only did one: Pod of Gold
Nice one!
-
So when do you think we'll know what it's going to be?
(Personally, I'm more interested in just getting my double dose of stories, but a shot at a new iPod doesn't suck... ;D)
-
I hope we find out soon, I was trying to win my girlfriend a new iPod since her old one just broke and she's been lost without her podcasts to listen to at work. :P
-
I only did one: Pod of Gold
Nice:) The best I could come up with was Calliopod.
-
Wow. Mine seems even lamer than I first thought of it... ConjurePod
-
I don't want Dragon Pod either. Spellcast is awesome though.
-
I don't want Dragon Pod either. Spellcast is awesome though.
It's also the name of a Harry Potter podcast...alas...
-
My entries were "FaePod" and "LorePod."
I made a Google Spreadsheet of my entry ideas so I could track which ones I'd sent on which dates, but as the days went on I consistently forgot to send them, so, oh well.
I had checked each one to make sure a .org domain name was available, but then proceeded to not enter them.
chimerapod.org
thronepod.org
wizardtower.org
magepod.org
spellpod.org
talepod.org
shortfantasy.org
spellbytes.org
faepod.org
crystalpod.org
lorepod.org
-
"It's also the name of a Harry Potter podcast...alas..."
What do they have, a couple dragons, some spells?
Bah. With our allies, Escape Pod and Psuedopod, not only can we match their dragons and magic, but we'll overwhelm them with zombies and a death star.
We can take 'em.
-

So any word on the results, yet? :)
-
chimerapod.org
No kidding?
That was my first thought. And here I was thinking I was all unique and ingenious.
-
What's even crazier is my buddy suggested it when I told him about the contest. I didn't enter it - I thought too few people would get it.
-
chimerapod.org
No kidding?
That was my first thought. And here I was thinking I was all unique and ingenious.
Hehe, me too :)
-
Hi,
It looks like a new podcast name has not been picked yet. I'm glad that is the case as I just heard about the contest today. Since podcasts are by nature downloaded and listened to later, there is a built-in delay before the bulk of listeners hear a show. I recommend that contests have a 30 day delay so everyone can be involved.
-
I'm sure Steve has picked a name.
He'll keep it close to the chest until he announces it on the cast.
-
chimerapod.org
No kidding?
That was my first thought. And here I was thinking I was all unique and ingenious.
Hehe, me too :)
same here haha
-
I talked to Steve briefly over IM last week and he said he was still gathering the names into a spreadsheet. I wonder if he's picked one by now. ??? :)
-
Have we made any headway on this...come on, inquiring minds want to know! :P ;D
-
Hi everybody! I'm new to the forums, but I've really enjoyed listening to the podcast the past few months. My submissions:
"Once Upod a Time"
"Fairy Podmother"
I also had others, but they were kinda crap so I'm a little embarrassed to post them. :P
Heh...fairypodmother.org was the only one that I submitted, but I did it fairly late in the contest. I even told him in my e-mail that I was sure someone else had thought of that one first. Looks like I was correct! :)
-
Still no word on the results. The last time I pestered Steve about it over IM, he said there would be an announcement. I didn't want to test his patience any further by asking when that announcement might be. :P
-
poddity
Pure genius, if I must say...
-
I thought we were going to find out this week. Bummer.
-
I thought we were going to find out this week. Bummer.
"I see you shiver with antici... pation."
-
Would you believe I've never seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show? But I still love that you quoted it, Thaur!
-
That's ok.
Neither has my gf, but I guess she can't be perfect in every way. : )
-
I was going to submit "arthurpod", sorta playing with "arthurian" but the association with bugs, crabs, spiders and such might be too distracting.
Also the arthurpod.org domain name appears to be unavailable.
-
ok, since it is now on the wikipedia article and both Jesse Willis and Evo Terra blogged about it I think it is time to say "Congratulations" to whoever suggested PodCastle.
May it shine as brightly as Escapepod and Pseudopod.
-
There's a wiki article?!
-
Ah, I see! It's an addendum to the Escape Pod article.
Well, anyhow. You can visit us online at http://www.podcastle.org. Sub guidelines are up.
-
Whoo hoo! Cool site. I am currently holding my breath in anticipation. :-X
-
Since I see no better place to put this
Steve: You have "We accept stories in e-mail, in plain text format, at the address submit@podcastle.org." on one part of your submission guidelines and "Once again, the submissions address is submit@escapepod.org. Stories sent to other addresses may not be considered." in another. I'm guessing this is an oversight but I thought you should know.

Excellent choice.
