Title: Escape Artists Holiday Stories
Post by: Fenrix on December 20, 2013, 04:35:00 PM
Since it's that time of year, I thought I would post a list of the holiday stories prior to this season. It's a good time of year to listen to them, and several of these chestnuts are worth dragging out annually for a relisten.

Two years back there was the 12 Days of Christmas 2011 Donor Bundle. This included many exclusive stories, plus some re-airing and re-recordings of these:
EP033 - Santa in My Pocket (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=2988.0)
EP085 - Merry Christmas from the Heartbreakers (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=2831.0)
EP137 - Citytalkers (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=1245.0)
EP184 - As Dry Leaves That Before the Wild Hurricane Fly (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=2244.0)
EP231 - As Solitary as an Oyster (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=3219.0)

Also from EscapePod, an alchemist take on A Christmas Carol in Marley and Cratchit (http://escapepod.org/2012/12/20/ep375-marley-and-cratchit/)
And 2013: EP427: Samantha’s Diary (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=7743.0)

And:
EP138: In the Late December by Greg van Eekout (http://escapepod.org/2007/12/25/ep138-in-the-late-december/)
EP474: In Coppelius’s Toyshop

Podcastle's been running a Pratt/Shaw story every December including these:
PC136 - The Christmas Mummy
PC188 - The Ghost of Christmas Possible
PC239 - Catching the Spirit (http://podcastle.org/2012/12/18/podcastle-239-catching-the-spirit/)
PodCastle 291: Seasonal Disorder (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=7739.0)
PodCastle 343: Elf Employment
PodCastle 395: Winter Jinni
PodCastle 447: It’s a Wonderful Carol
PodCastle 501: The Christmas Abomination from Beyond the Back of the Stars

PseudoPod is not one to be left out:
PP017 - Upon the Midnight Clear
PP218 - Flash on the Borderlands V "Hoofprints in the Snow"
PP259 - To My Wondering Eyes Did Appear
PP260 - Saint Nicholas' Helper
Bonus Christmas Flash 2011 - Coming Home
Bonus Christmas Flash 2013 – Helpers (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=7748.0)
Pseudopod Christmas 2014 Bonus Flash: Tradition
PseudoPod 470: The Santa Claus Parade
PseudoPod 522: The Christmas Spirits – A Tale of the White Street Society
PseudoPod 573: Bitter Perfume
PseudoPod 575: Christmas Present

Cast of Wonders should be added to this list. I'll need some help going backwards to make sure I fill everything in properly.

Cast of Wonders 282: Dreidel Of Dread: The Very Cthulhu Chanukah

I'll be editing to add links and stuff and maybe improve the formatting. I could probably also add explicitly Thanksgiving stories, but I'd probably be too tempted to include all the family cannibalism stories on PseudoPod that conveniently get run at the end of November.

ETA: 2013 stories
ETA: 2014+ (haven't touched this almost four years, and it still needs some major cleanup)

There are some compelling titles, but don't be fooled into thinking that these are holiday stories:

EP014 - Tis the Season (http://escapepod.org/2005/08/11/ep014-tis-the-season/)
Outside the title and the time that the story is set, it's not very Christmasy. It's religious satire with a Christmas window display.

EP220 - Come All Ye Faithful
Interesting story about Catholicism and Apparitions. Doesn't have anything to do with the Baby Jesus or the song about him that the title invokes.

EP272 - Christmas Wedding
Some window-dressing poinsettias and mistletoe, and including the word "Christmas" in the title, and releasing it near December 25 doesn't make this a Christmas story.

EP320 - Thanksgiving Day
If the author was trying to evoke the story of the first Thanksgiving, that point completely missed me.

I need to update this to add the 2014 stories. While I'm bumping this, what are everyone's favorite podcasted holiday stories, here on EA or elsewhere?

Fenrix, you forgot one of my favorites: In the Late December, by Greg van Eekhout (from Escape Pod.) Rocket Launcher Rudolph! http://escapepod.org/2007/12/25/ep138-in-the-late-december/

Thanks for the tip! I'm not sure I've heard that one. I'm pretty far behind on EscapePod, although I am rapidly approaching caught up on the entire PodCastle catalog.

Definitely don't miss all the Pratt/Shaw holiday stories the Drabblecast has run, too. :) I'm too lazy to link these, so you can just look them up on the master list using CTRL+F here. (http://forums.drabblecast.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4633)

- "On Dasher"
- "Rangifer Volans"
- "A Fairy Tale of Oakland"
- "Postapocalypsemas"
- "Happy Old Year" (New Year's themed!)

FWIW, I'm pretty sure Pratt and Shaw didn't write "On Dasher." I think that was Jonathan Gillespie :)

The holiday themed shows from the Byron Chronicles are all pretty good (as is the rest of the Byron Chronicles).

Just touched this for the first time in almost four years. What am I still missing from the list?

I don't know offhand, but I wish it had occurred to me to prepare a wiki page like this during the summer - I would have added it to the Tweetdeck!
