Title: Escape Artists on Wikia
Post by: Tango Alpha Delta on December 05, 2015, 04:12:28 AM
Greetings, fellow Forumites!

A few months ago, you may remember hearing a call for volunteers to help expand Escape Artists' presence in the world. I was one of those volunteers, and my idea has to do with capturing the rich history of the last decade of great stories and promoting the things that Escape Artists will be doing in the future.

Please visit Escape Artists Wikia (http://escape-artists.wikia.com/wiki/Escape_Artists_Wikia), and take a tour!

Some features to look for:

Look for the "Random Wiki (http://"http://escape-artists.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Random")" link to see a sample of the pages that are there, so far.

Since this is a wiki, that means that if you are so inclined, you can help, too. Editorial improvements are not only allowed, but encouraged! Any red link you see on any page means that there is not yet a destination page about that person or topic. If you see a red link for your favorite author or reader in one of the episode lists, for example, you could click on it and be the one to start the page about them!

The original episode posts are linked to from the Episode lists to make them easy to find, and they usually have author and reader bios you can use to  start a new wiki page.

All fans are welcome - no need to ask permission to edit. (There is a "How to" in my Google Slides: Editing Escape Artists Wikia (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1RMrtIQSDd4ahcTZd11yhvgH-74uRhK_Klrdn6Jx12ME/edit?usp=sharing).)

If any style issues or questions arise, we can discuss them here, on the EA forum, or there are comment sections on each wiki page. If you have concerns about copyrighted content in the wiki (photos or bios, etc.) please ask; for the most part, if you find it on an Escape Artists website, and want to put it on the wiki, that should be okay.

I'll be "lurking" and eager to help if anyone runs into problems. My user name there is "PapaSmirk (http://"http://escape-artists.wikia.com/wiki/Message_Wall:PapaSmirk")" and you should see a welcome note from my robot assistant when you make your first edit.

I hope you find this useful, and at least a little bit fun! I've got a bit of a head start on earning user badges and racking up edit count, so catch me if you can!

I have now spammed our Facebook groups, so let the onslaught begin!

I hope I'm not the only one who enjoys doing this! :)

I have some photos that need to be added.

Is that a request for help, or just a statement?

There may have been some photos added already. There might be some Easter Werewolf pictures waiting to go up. I might also be holding on to some of those movember pictures you took last year.

I claim no responsibility for terrible formatting.

Article #100: Kevin M. Hayes (http://escape-artists.wikia.com/wiki/Kevin_M._Hayes)!

Quick question for anyone: would it help if I put together a "How to" for editing Wikia? So far, it has mostly been me and Fenrix, with a small handful of authors and narrators chipping in with some edits. If I can lower any more barriers to entry, I am eager to get more contributors interested.

(I'll probably do a "How to" either way, I just need to know if that's something people are waiting for, or if I should keep on trucking and assume most people are just busy with holiday stuff.)

UPDATE: I did a "How to" after all, and put it in Google Slides: Editing Escape Artists Wikia (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1RMrtIQSDd4ahcTZd11yhvgH-74uRhK_Klrdn6Jx12ME/edit?usp=sharing). (It was more fun than ironing...)

Wow, I just randomly looked at this today, and Fenrix added a page on me yesterday. That's...creepy.

Yes! Well done! As the Empire grows... I mean... good job!  ;)

Well done to you, too!

Any suggestions on who should get the honor of being page #150?

Update: home sick today, so #150 is... Ann Leckie (http://escape-artists.wikia.com/wiki/Ann_Leckie)!

Some of it might even be true. I got internet points for putting that page up.

Quote
Shane is frequently mistaken for three unicorns standing on top of each other inside a trenchcoat.

Sounds legit to me! Definitely need to start including that in my bios...

If someone who can actually *SEE* what the heck they're doing would finish and tidy up my page, I'd be eternally grateful. Turns out blind folks just can't make head nor tail of it all :(

I managed to create it

http://escape-artists.wikia.com/wiki/Emma_Smailes

And I *think* I even got a photo of me on it, but as for what else has worked or not, I don't have the faintest clue. If you need to get hold of my bio, there's one at

http://www.castofwonders.org/2017/09/introducing-our-new-associate-editors/

Under, funnily enough, the heading Emma Smailes ;)

It's just too much for me to manage without eyes *Throws up hands in defeat*

Thanks, Dani. It's a bind having to ask, but sometimes you just gotta.  :-*

I feel for you - the regular Wikimedia is supposed to be compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act, section 508, and allow for easier reading by text-readers and other assistive technologies. But the Wikia site seems to be focused on being more visual.

If you're familiar at all with the wiki markup language, you can edit the Source Editor version of each page, which doesn't use all of the fancy Java-scripting that breaks assistive interfaces... but does require you to know how many square brackets to use when you make a link.

Emma has flashback to the '90s,. A lecture theatre on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Desperately trying to keep track of brackets in a piece of SML code *shudder!*

TBH, it could have been as simple as a lack of familiarity with the editor. Or I might have been using the wrong one - I gather there are two.
