Title: Audio+Illustrations
Post by: sanman on April 01, 2016, 06:28:17 AM
Hi, I'm a n00b to the forum, so I hope my post isn't an ignorant blurt, but I wanted to ask if content creators here (ie. makers of your wonderful podcasts) have considered upping the ante by trying to publish your audio content accompanied by appropriate illustrations?

(Disclaimer: I'm not an illustrator, nor do I know any illustrators, nor am I here to market any illustrators or anything like that)

I really enjoyed listening to some of your podcasts, and I just thought that somehow setting the audio against a montage of illustrations would improve them even further. I guess that would sort of be like an audio comic in many ways.

Here's a fan-made audio comic I came across on Youtube - the fellow took a well-known Marvel comic series and read all the voices himself, adding music and sound fx:

youtube.com/watch?v=2TV2qpDah2c (http://youtube.com/watch?v=2TV2qpDah2c)

Maybe you could attempt something similar from the opposite direction - doing the audio first, and maybe finding someone to do some illustrations to accompany it.

Anyway, just a thought. :)

I think we would be very interested in doing something like that at some point in the future, though right now the budget just isn't there to make it happen. If we were to pull images from online, we would have to pay for the rights to use them. If we were to solicit original art, we'd have to pay a full-time narrator. Plus the production time per episode would roughly quadruple.

We have, however, recently gotten some more help and I have some other ideas to roll out in the near future that may interest you. Stay tuned.

As an aside, your thought reminded me of the old PBS show Cover to Cover where the John Robbins would draw pictures in pastels while the story was narrated behind him. I still think of that first anytime A Wrinkle in Time comes up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PglgCTH9YcA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PglgCTH9YcA)

Fair enough - although perhaps I can mention that in my travels around the internet, I've come across wonderful creative sites like conceptart.org (http://conceptart.org)

If you browse their forums, you can see some of the wonderful illustrative creations from their art community (they even have weekly art contests, etc). You may be able to get artists on the cheap from there, or perhaps even get some free voluntary work in exchange for crediting them in your work.
(Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with their forum, site, or art community - it's simply a place I've visited, just like I've visted your site here).

Haha, yes, I remember watching that show even as a child, and the pictures have stayed in my head all these years. Great memories! :D
I was actually going to post a link to the John Robbins stuff as well in my previous post.

I think illustrated stills done in the right style could dramatically enhance the quality of your already beautiful work. Sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words.

Anyway, I'm very glad to have discovered your site here, because I'm really enjoying the content. Please keep on doing this great stuff!  :)
