Scott Sigler expands a little on his forthcoming book & responds to a critic ;)

I was amused by his response to some fairly harsh criticism.

Its interesting to me to basically see what seems to be the entire internet putting the effort into promoting his book (the word I wanted to use was "pimping," actually, but I did not want to give the impression I was implying this was bad). I understand why this is happening, and I hope its effective (I am too poor right now to purchase the book myself and help out, unfortunately. Maybe when I get my tax rebate ).

As an aside, tangentially related, since realizing a few authors visit the forums here I've found myself a little more reluctant to offer criticism. Although its very cool to see when they do drop in, I feel bad if I've said anything negative, and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings... I know they've all worked hard on their submissions. I donno. I'll get over it; I like 95% of the stories on EP anyway, there have only been three in all I've heard that I've really disliked.

As an author, I'd encourage you to offer criticism.  However, I understand where you're coming from and tend to more often let myself gush about stories or discuss aspects of the stories.  Sometimes, I'll explain why a story doesn't work for me, but I tend to not do that as much, and sometimes feel guilty when I do do it.  (Especially for EP -- I'd feel really bad if Steve quoted something negative I said in one of his feedback outros.  I'd rather have people remember something positive I said.  That's just me -- other writers here do things their way, which is cool.)  That doesn't mean that if I don't comment on a story, I didn't like it.  But I tend to comment more on the stuff I really connected with.

Has anyone listened to the Infected audiobook that Sigler's put into his feed?  Is it very different from the original podiobook?  I'm just wondering if I should listen to it again, or listen to new stuff.

He says in the Boing Boing comments that it's edited and a much stronger book now, which is why he took down the original podiobook in favor of doing it all over again with this text of Infected.

Ah, cool.  Just read it.  Interesting -- that seems like a completely new part of the book. 

And one thing I love about Sigler (there's a lot of other things I love about him, but I'll just focus on the one) is that he's completely fine with being an ass and standing up for his work.  I love that he told the guy who was being a jerk to blow him.  I've seen that happen a couple of times now, and it's interesting to note that both times he's responded to people being jerks, people later on in the comment thread slap him on the back and tell him they've just decided to check out his book.

I'm guessing its like what he did with Ancestor.  Cut a little, add a few plot points and WHABAM its two times better.  I have no complaints, well, other than I want more Nocturnal but that is neither here nor there.

I have to say, initially the Infected release had me excited on a mostly conceptual level.  I'm a big fan of podcasting and nontraditional publication and all, and there are a few podcast novels I would love to see get a paper release (*crosses fingersoh please oh please*).

Then I read it.

Wow.  I'm definitely picking up a copy for my own shelf, and probably sending half the people I know to the bookstore to pick up a copy.  What a great, rivetting, kinda sick thriller!

Now to go take a half-hour steaming hot shower.

I find I still offer criticism, but I try to make it constructive.  Where before I would have said, "I didn't like this story," now I will say, "I didn't like this story because..."  Hopefully it will make better authors out of them.
