Thought it was a little sad (just that he seems so frustrated), but interesting. There are links to lots of people's (include Mur Lafferty & Matt Selznick's) blog posts on the subject in the comments.

I don't have much to say about it I guess, I just thought it may interest anyone else who enjoys podcast fiction.

I *just* read about this on Monday, and it's been bumming me out ever since. Like seriously bumming me out. While I completely understand and respect his decision and his reasons for it, I can't shake the feeling that we've lost one of the greats in podcasting, and we're poorer for it.

I felt better after reading Mur's take on the situation.  J.C. is just changing his focus to acheive his personal goals.

I also like her link to Neil Gaiman's very direct response to an impatient George R.R. Martin fan.  It gives great insight to our expectations of content creators regardless of whether we pay for their work or get it for free.

Yeah, its realistic, I just feel bad that the goal he was trying to achieve couldn't be reached in the manner he was attempting. He sunk a lot of time and effort into everything he was doing. He definitely became one of the prominent names in podcast fiction.

And, unfortunately, demonstrated that doesn't necesarily translate into real world success.

I wish him well taking a new approach to things, I expect having a set fanbase already in place may aid him if he turns to traditional publishing.

I have his book sitting on my shelf.  He may not have translated his efforts into financial success but, in my opinion, he is successful.

He was published by St. Martin's Press, that's as traditional as it gets, you can't even submit to them, they come to you. His book sank, sadly, as tens of thousands of others do every single year. It's harder I think for his stuff as he gave it away from years on podiobooks. Translating free content to for pay content is a rough, rough road. I don't think he'll be the first "big name" podio-author to have his belief in the publishing 2.0 (or whatever it's called) model shaken to pieces in the next couple of years.
