I went to see the new Tom Cruise / Morgan Freeman movie Oblivion last night.   While I had expected it to be reasonably good, it was better than I expected.

The premise is that after an alien attack, humans evacuate Earth for Titan. (This part of the premise was one of several things I had originally filed under "OK, work with me, here" but turned out to have a real reason behind it.) Jack (Tom Cruise) and his partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) are part of a "mop-up crew" watching over and repairing the drones that guard an energy project that is part of the evacuation.

Without getting into massive spoilers, all I can say is that the movie is about the slow unraveling of this scenario, and for me, it worked. The psychological elements were particularly well-done for an action movie.

I found the action sequences a bit too long and generally didn't contribute enough to the story for the screen time they burned, but I've had that problem with most movies I've seen lately with any action elements.  I think it may be a generational change in style as much as anything.

I'll say right now that there are some plot holes and assumptions that you do have to buy -- machines capable of space flight that can be discombobulated by a lightning strike, atmospheric craft capable of the jump to low orbit, the necessity of seawater for fusion power -- but I think I've had these sorts of issues with most big-screen SF.  For some reason, movies usually seem to lack the world-building rigor of the written form.  And as I said, several things I wrote off as spurious turned out to be more realistic than I thought.

Anyway, I found it a worthwhile and entertaining experience; I hope others do, too.

I expected more of a brainless action flick, but yeah... I was drawn in by the mystery of the story and I really liked it.

I do feel like.... The ending maybe was a bit too neat. I wouldn't have minded it if it had ended on a different note, like the audience was led to believe it would. But I suppose Hollywood has to have their endings tidy.

It was also gorgeous visually.

Saw this today, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it! I don't really want to comment specifics though, unless we declare this a spoiler zone, because I feel that the less one knows going in the better. :)

Yeah, I had the same problem.  There are parts of the movie I'd love to talk about, but since discussion of anything but the barest outline leads quickly to spoiler territory, I feel like I can't.

I reject the name based on the obvious attempt to draw audience hoping for an update of a true classic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110706/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2), but I am interested in seeing this movie to be renamed later.

Great blog post, thanks for sharing! One hilarious (to me) criticism that my sister offered was that: This is basically Minority Report again. How? Tom Cruise realizes that the organization that he's been working for are not who he thinks they are, and now they are out to get him. He must fight for his life and find friends in unexpected places if he hopes to survive. What do you think? :D (note: highlight to view spoiler-ish in white)

I'm not the only one who's seen that? I brought it up in the "Cowboys and Aliens" thread but it was roundly ignored.

Please... I was so excited when it came out because I SO wanted there to be a live action version of Galaxy Rangers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_the_Galaxy_Rangers
