Laputa —or— Castle in the Sky

Quote from: Wikipedia
Laputa: Castle in the Sky (天空の城ラピュタ Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta?) (re-titled Castle in the Sky for release in the United States) (in English, literally translated as The Sky's Castle: Laputa) is a film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, released in 1986. It is the first film created and released by Studio Ghibli, although is considered the second by some since Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was created by the founding members two years before. Laputa: Castle in the Sky won the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1986."—Wikipedia

I loved this one.  But then, I love just about all Studio Ghibli films (didn't think much of My Neighbor Totoro because it was skewed a bit young for my tastes, and Howl's Moving Castle wasn't a bad story, but it also wasn't the story Diana Wynne Jones wrote.)

This one was just plain fun.

I also love pretty much everything Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki, and this isn't an exception.

And again with the Miyazaki love.  I first saw Nausicaa and adored it.  Next I saw Lupin: Castle Cagliostro, but didn't actually realize it was the same guy.  Then this... which somehow tied them both together and I realized it was the same man behind all three films.  I've loved everything he's done (Totoro included!).  Laputa is far from my favorite, but that still puts it head and shoulders above any other anime, and in the ranks of the best animated films ever.  I loved Iron Giant, but Laputa gets me far more.  I just love the sense of adventure in this flick.

Yeah, this is one of my favorite movies of any type, and I don't even like Japanese animation.  I was looking forward to a discussion of it here, but I guess no one can find anything to gripe about.

I'm not the biggest anime fan, but something about this had me doing the firmly-gripped-open-macbook-on-the-1-train which I never otherwise do, so very large thumbs up, and a tough decision of who this movie kicks out of my top ten.
