My mom's birthday is coming up pretty soon, and I want to get her some audiobooks to put on her iPod. Being a college student, I don't want to fork over $30 a book (and my mom would probably appreciate it more if was downloaded and burned by me (i.e. homemade) rather than store bought). I know all about Podiobooks and Librivox, and those are good starting off points. But looking through those sites, I haven't seen many books that my mom would be interested in. She told me she wants self-help books, and "modern women's fiction" (the kind of stuff found on Oprah's book club). She also would probably enjoy Jane Austen-esque books.

Does anyone have any suggestions on books and/or websites where I can obtain such books for free?

Thanks a bunch for the help.

Jane-Austenesque, but not Jane Austen Actual?  Because Austen's work is available at Librivox.

Yeah, not actual Jane Austen. She's read them all, and seen all the movies and the BBC mini-series, and just loves them, but I'd like to get my mom some stuff that is new to her. She wants stuff to listen to so she won't get bored while walking the dog everyday, and on long car trips.

You could take advantage of Escape Pod's free audiobook promotion from audible. Of course, Audible is currently a DRM-fest AFAIK, and I don't know how much that affects things when you want to burn to a CD.

I usually rip borrowed library CDs, but that's just the kind of unscrupulous person I am; you might happen to be more principled.

DRM goes away if you burn an audio cd, not an mp3 cd, but audio...

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?

And circumventing the DRM is a breach of copyright, under the terms of the DMCA. Audible say you have the right to copy your books to CD once, but their EULA doesn't carry the weight of law, and they're not the copyright holder, anyway. Technically, burning an Audible audiobook to CD is illegal.

I'm hoping that now that the music industry is figuring out that DRM is a worthless money sink, Audible will follow suit soon enough. I want to be a customer of theirs, but while they continue to insist that I break the law in order to be able to listen to their content in the time and place of my choosing, I obviously can't do business with them.

Funny how "bookburning" used to mean something quite different.  ;)
