First of all, let me thank everyone who brings me EscapePod and Pseudopod. When I discovered them, I had to backtrack and listen to them all. Now that I have, I'm hungry for more. So, I have searched and found a few very interesting shows from the 50's. Of course they show their age in differing ways, but if one enjoys science fiction B-movies as much as I do, that won't be a deal breaker with these radio programs.

The first show I began listening to was X minus One. I like it so much that I've slowed the rate of shows I listen to weekly, so as to delay the coming of the final episode. X minus One was a weekly program in the U.S. with stories taken from Galaxy magazine. (and maybe others)

The other thing I've been downloading is Journey Into Space. Now this one is a serial from the BBC. I find the British, at least in this show, seem to have taken their science and fiction seriously, as opposed to campy. Of course they made up for that  later with Red Dwarf, which I love so don't flame me.

I'm interested to know what other shows of good quality may be floating around out there. Any suggestions?

Oh, and here are links to the shows described above.

I am really not all that old (although this story may make it seem like I am) BUT when I was in my preteens I used to listen late at night to all kinds of radio dramas on Sunday nights. Some radio station (and which one is lost in my head like how to solve a rubiks cube) used to play radio drama's on Sunday night. My parents bought us all small radio transistor radios for Xmas one year and I belonged to the Radio Shack battery club so every Sunday night I would lie in my bunk bed with my brothers sleeping below me and listen to the radio dramas late into the night. The Shadow was a fav serial of mine, but they also had adventure and horror stories which were what would really keep me up way to late and if it was while school was on I would end up pretty tired that next Monday.

Anyway, I get my fix now from 2 primary sources. http://www.radiolovers.com/ and botar's old time radio podcast http://www.botar.us/botr.xml which is fantastic as well to give you a nice broad range of good old time radio programs.

I get to ride a train to work anymore, so since I only get one escape pod and one pseudo pod per week it helps to round out the week. I really do like X minus 1 though. Some great short fiction in those old shows.

Thanks for the reply. I am familiar with BOTAR. I think it's where I first heard X minus 1. Their Thursday schedule is mostly scifi/horror/suspense. I became aware of several quality shows there. The Weird Circle, Dark Fantasy and Inner Sanctum are a couple of the better ones in the horror/suspense category.

I was not aware of http://www.radiolovers.com/. Thanks for the link.

Internet Archive is a good place to find radio programs, too.

Same here.  WCAU-AM Philadelphia did that until they went over to fifties music.

more from Internet Archive...
Dimension X with episodes adapted from many of the great authors.

The Planet Man - rather corny, but okay.

Oh, I never looked at this series before: Nightfall - I always thought it was just the one Asimov story, but it looks like a Horror series. I'll have to check them out.

I feed The Pod.

Hi Planish,

I've known about Dimension X. It seems that most or all of their stories were redone as  X minus One episodes. Something I've been wanting to do is compare a few episodes to see which I prefer.

I'd never heard of Planet Man. Thanks, I'll have to check into it.

And thanks for the link to Nightfall, another series I'd never heard of until your mention. I downloaded several episodes onto my MP3 player and listened to a couple at work today. A sometimes really gruesome show. The credits say NPR, but I think it is also supposed to be Canadian. With all the gore and language, I would doubt these shows have ever aired in Amerika. We must think of the children, you know.

Well this one is not old... And they ran out of funding part way though, BUT it was a lot of fun. http://claybourne.thepodcastnetwork.com/ it is a shame they did not get to finish it. I liked the one for the Halo 2 premier as well http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/ilb_reordered/, another ARG is going on for Halo 3 now, I haven't gotten around to signing in yet but I have always liked the whole Bungie mad AI story arcs starting with the original Marathon games.
