Just got my copy of "Daughter of the Son" by Lonnie Ezell.  Ran my hands over the shiny cover.  Opened it... and sniffed it.

Why do I do that?  I always sniff new books.  I stick my nose in between the pages and sniff.  Dont know why.

You're not alone.

My mother does this as well.  However, she says it's because some books have mold and she doesn't want it getting into her other books.

Why is it that I can sniff a good Scotch for several minutes before taking a sip?  Some things just smell good.  Books usually do.

Maybe it is some kind of geek narcotic.

I've never intentionally sniffed a book -- it can be a dangerous prospect when you buy books at a library sale (Steve/other Atlantans: Cobb County Library holds them 3-4 times a year at the Equestrian Center and Park in west-central Cobb, if you're interested).  I appreciate the scent of old literature, but I don't stick my nose in there on purpose.

I might sniff a really old book, or a really new never-been-opened book, but rarely middle-aged ones. Usually just hardcovers too.

I've sniffed freshly opened action figures before.  That's a sweet smell.  Never a book.  Maybe I should try?
