Flash: I Am Nature

By J M McDermott

Read by Ben Phillips

Detroit is dying. All the ornamental structures from
the glory days of American industry wilt in ruin.
There’s one building — found it myself — where the
roof caved in one winter. There’s a tree that used to
be in the lobby — and it’s dead — but its children
are growing there. The forest has taken over the
lobby. Birds hide everywhere, in the trees and the
rafters, and their shit covers everything, but their
singing is so beautiful.

Listen to this Pseudopod Flash.

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?

I liked that one in a not really scary but beautiful way. Dying cities are beautiful (sorry to anyone from Detroit ;-).

I had the same thought about Detroit, but a very different reaction.  I think old cities are beutiful.  Dying cities are a lot like dying people.  It's heartbreaking, and even harder to watch if the soon to be deceased is someone/where you love.

*L* I actually think I've been in that building!

Great story in so many ways!

How do you fight a bully that can un-make history?

Not a bad bit o' flash!

There was quite a bit going on there; lots of subtext to dig into.  And if you had promised me it was true, I might have believed you!

I finally published my book - Tad's Happy Funtime is on Amazon!

I didn't care for this one much, mostly because it didn't have a story arc.  The story ended where the story began with nothing appreciably changed, either internally or externally.  Guy on a mission to off junkies one by one, not my cup of tea.

This was a good one.  Not much in the tension department, but an interesting story and a disturbing look at the very real nightmares in the bowels of shattered cities.
