Classic Tales only gets a moderate recommendation from me. Some of the stories are dated, but most of them hold up pretty well and the production values are nice.

I can't quite make myself recommend Pseudopod. I SO much want to like it, but the quality of the stories selected are a touch uneven compared to the other sites. I'm also not a big fan of the intro line "I've got a story for you, and I promise it's true." That feels to me like a forced imitation of EscapePod's much better "It's story time." It reminded me of when Jay Leno used to walk onto the stage with a little air-guitar riff as his take on Johnny Carson's golf swing. In both case it made the newcomer feel like it was trying to copy the original but not quite succeeding.

I wonder if anyone else here listens to any of the others mentioned.

Heh. I always felt the opposite - that PP's intro line was better than EP's one. For EP, it's just a neutral introduction. For PP, it's extra value. Given the reaction last time PP tried to get rid of it, I think I'm not the only one that enjoys the line.

That said, I agree that PP's story quality is uneven, and averages at lower than EP. I think that's a reflection of the genre more than anything else - if you pick up a random horror anthology in a bookstore, the quality will likely be overall worse than that of a science fiction anthology. I still think it's worth recommending.

Wow, I didn't know Selected Shorts was doing a podcast!  I used to listen to that every week, but my schedule got to where it just wasn't happening, and at the time there was no way to timeshift the show.  Good to know!

I listen to EP and PP (obviously) and also Variant Frequencies and Drabblecast.  I think they all fluctuate and some episodes are better than others, but I still really like the majority of what I'm getting and recommend them to anyone who will listen.  However, I cannot think of a bad episode of This American Life that I've listened to.  That show is consistently amazing.  (I need to check out the TV show sometime.)

Does anyone listen to Well Told Tales or Decoder Ring Theater?  I've been meaning to give them a try but haven't yet.

I'm strictly EP but am looking to add some more short story fiction to my IPod.  Will do PP for sure.  I was wondering about Drabblecast, for some reason it isn't current on I-Tunes.  Does anyone know why this is?

It should be on itunes...that's how I subscribed to it, at least.  DC is great -- the stuff before and after the story is usually as good as the stories themselves.

I just checked I-Tunes, the last episode listed is #36.  I'll have to go to the website for current content.

If you subscribe to the DC, you should get all of them.  If you don't want all, just set your preference to "Do Nothing" in "When new podcasts are available".  Then you can manually click on the episodes you want to download.

Good, I'll try that. Might as well load them all up at once and give it a run through.

Nope, iTunes won't offer 1-35 even if you subscribe.

I read Darwinist as saying he could only get 1-35 and now eytanz says he can't get 1-35 at all.  I only subscribed (through the iTunes link at the DC site) about three weeks ago and got it all.

I just unsubscribed and then subscribed again through the iTunes store.  I got eps 1-50.  Whatever the glich, it seems to have passed.

I think Drawinist was also saying he couldn't get 1-35 (by "last episode is 36" I thought he meant "the last one on the iTunes list", which lists them in reverse order).

In any case, this was indeed fixed - 1-20 appeared on my iTunes this morning.

Being new to the whole Podcast thing, I'm actually surprised I have nearly half of the mentioned Podcasts in my Favorites (in my brand new Podcast folder!). Escape Pod and Pseudopod, of course, top my list, followed by Variant Frequencies and Well Told Tales. The Drabblecast is in there, but I have yet to listen to any of their stories. I'm assuming it's highly recommended, based on the people rushing off to iTunes for it.

Nobilis Erotica is a weekly podcast of erotic short stories, serials, and excerpts.  You can find it at nobilis.libsyn.com.  The audio is not safe for work, but there are no images there that'll get you in trouble.

Nobilis Erotica.  I first heard a promo for it while listening to Variant Frequencies.  I listened to a few early episodes -- not really my cup of tea, but I did like the "Dreamland" series for its SFnal qualities.

I need an RSS feed that offers mp3 files before I can subscribe to Drabblecast.  I don't have a device that'll play their file format.

I downloaded the whole backlog and really didn't like the old Red Panda, but then Heradel and others kept talking about.  The Red Panda from after they started podcasting are much better and Black Jack Justice is just great.

yah, workin on that.  I mistakenly thought mp4 and m4a was standard, or becoming more standard, on most players a year ago and used iWeb to publish the cast (which only publishes those formats).  Tryin to figure something out but can't see anyway around it other than republishing everything with different software or starting a seperate mp3 feed

I liked "Absolution Insured" and "The Rut" on Variant Frequencies.

At Darker Projects, I'd suggest "Black List" (Night Terrors), The Byron Chronicles (don't forget "Byron's Tale in the Night Terrors feed), and Gothik.  On a related note, anyone else listening to Darker Projects?

More of my reviews of some of the sites in the poll are at http://www.vu.union.edu/~morrisa/Podcasts_Index.htm.

I haven't really been able to get into Darker Projects.  Escapepod is by far the best fiction podcast in general, in my opinion. My favorites so far, Friction and Barnaby in Exile.  Psuedopod and Drabblecast are my second favorite podcasts- Psuedopod's Bagman, That Old Black Magic by John Platt and Akroplis by Matt Wallace and Drabblecasts "Pumpinseeds" by Kevin Anderson, "Jelly Park" by Aliya Whitely and "Sing" by Kathleen Kathryn Rusch the best of those.

Clonepod. Good production, decent stories, edited by kids and adults. New.

Fans of the Union Dues stories, so that's always good.

Look for "Union Dues: The Ballad of Kitty Momoiro" to appear there soon.

The hard part about answering the poll is, the only ones I don't recommend are the ones I haven't heard, and every time I start to fill it out, I think, "I'd better check out ___ next," and then there's another one that I would vote for... and I'm quickly approaching 11 ;)

I highly recommend the Classic Tales podcast.  I think some of the stories being dated is partly the point.  I find it to be a wealth of classic literature.  As with EP, I don't like every story, but on the whole, I am well pleased.  I also find the production to be very good and consistant.

My other choices were Drabblecat and EP.  For some reason, I've stopped listening to to Psuedopod.  I guess it is because I enjoy the lighter horror stories and the plain spooky ones, but the macabre or bloody ones turn me off.

Facehuggers don't have heads!

Come with me and Journey Into... another fun podcast

I used to subscribe to Well-told Tales and quite enjoyed most of them, but then I got a couple of months behind while I listened to a bunch of full-length audiobooks. Must go back and catch up.
Decoder Ring Theater does look interesting. I was listening to most of the hard-boiled old-time radio shows on archive.org until I discovered EP.

Just discovered "Air Out My Shorts". It's a hoot, and does not depend on the quality of their submissions.

Pseudopod ... well, I've determined that I'm not really a fan of Horror as a genre. Unless it's Stephen King, I'm not so interested. I did really like "Flat Dianne", but not many others, so I did not vote for it in this poll.

I do like the PP "... and I promise you it's true" intros.

I feed The Pod.

I listened to one of those -- the one Rick Stringer narrated, and despite his reading, it just didn't do that much for me.  Maybe I'll try another story.

Yeah, Mr. Biggs is hard to explain but loads of fun.  and The Moth is apparently a NYC monologue series that puts some things out on podcast.  If you really like them you can get more from their website, both to stream and to purchase.

I'm new to podcasting, I just listen to Escapepod, Drabblecast, Pseudopod and now Podcastle.  I started Classic Tales and Variant Frequencies and couldn't get into them because of the readings... to me, the reading makes or breaks the story.  Escapepod usually has good readings but almost always has good stories- Drabblecast usually has good stories but always has good readings- I can't find other podcasts with consistancy in these areas, although I just got This American Life and I know that will be good.
I also tried Darker Projects and haven't been able to get through most of what I started.

I'm interested.  I still have all the files of your show, up through "Magical Clothing Episode 6" though I've only listened as far as show #9 ("Erin Goes Braless").  Is "Magical Clothing" the speculative fairy tale you mention?  I haven't deleted the files yet because something about that title grabbed me.

Just popping back here to say that I listened to the first part of "Magical Clothing" last night.  Interesting ... a sort of sequel to "The Emperor's New Clothes".  I'll keep listening; I'd like to see where this is going. :)

I haven't really been able to get into Darker Projects.

I also tried Darker Projects and haven't been able to get through most of what I started.

I guess I'm one of the few people here who like Darker Projects.  I'll admit that the differences between single-voice podcasts and multiple-voice podcasts (or audio theatre podcast) are substantial.  One of the problems I'm having with Darker Projects and now Broken Sea (which features a number of voice actors who started (to the best of my knowledge) at DP) is that I've begun to associate certain voices with certain parts.

Most that are profound would choose to narrate tales of living men with nouns like sorrow, verbs like lose, and action scenes, and love – but then there are now some, and brave they be, that speak of Lunar cities raised and silver spheres and purple seas, leaving us who listen dazed. -- Irena Foygel

I actually love the multi-voice thing about Darker Projects.  The reason I gave up on it was the stories.  I checked out 4 or 5 episodes and thought they were duds and then listened to the series "autumn" which was actually great but had, by far, the biggest "you've gotta be kidding me" ending EVER.
I should check them out again though- I think with better story selection and better mixing on their music/effects this podcast could be amazing.

I was looking at the classic tales podcast website and was wondering if anyone knew why only episodes 50 - 53 were available
thanks in advance

it appears that after adding new options to the poll you can no longer 'Remove Vote' to change your choices.

i'll probably wipe the voting in a week or two so that everyone has a chance to choose a new set of favourites. if there's a better way to do this i'd be very interested to hear it.

Of course, a lot would depend on the friend.  My wife loves This American Life but because of the way I listen to podcasts -- typically working out, cleaning, or doing house and yard work -- I strongly favor shorter podcasts.  And of course, no point in recommending Escape Pod to a friend who just isn't a fan of the genre.

Maybe a better question is: "Select your personal top 11 podcasts."

Hey Nobilis, I enjoyed "Magical Clothes" / "Magical Clothing" (you seemed to oscillate between the two titles; I'm not sure which is the correct one).  I liked how the sex was in service to the story, rather than the story being a vehicle for the sex -- some episodes were surprisingly light on the sexual content, which shows you were definitely thinking "story first."

Kudos, and I look forward to your next SF project.

the poll has been wiped in order to add new options. you now have the chance to change your favourites.

unfortunately, due to program restrictions, the limit is still at eleven votes and the option to change your choices seems to have disappeared. hopefully these wont be big problems.

Of course, a lot would depend on the friend.

Maybe a better question is: "Select your personal top 11 podcasts."

the wording was intentional, this is supposed to be a way for people to discover new podcasts outside of escape artists.

just the fact that we're all reading this forum is an indication that we have similar tastes but, at the same time, we all have personal quirks. things we like that few other people do.

by filtering for a generic friend we should get a good recommendation for the average reader.

Thank you, deflective, for this list of wonderful short story podcasts! I never heard of Drabblecast and now I'm hooked! Wonderful strange podcast.
I must be a real strange girl to be loving those strange stories. Yep, I am. Thanks for introducing the podcast to me!

Having said that, I can't vote this poll... I keep telling my friends how I love fiction podcasts and audiobooks and NOBODY reacts! I want my friends to shout: "Yeah! Love it! Tell me more, please!" And then I will give them the whole list.

Come to think of it, I may need some new friends...

The "recommend to a friend" wording eliminated Air Out My Shorts for me - I listen to it and enjoy it a lot, but between the very irregular updates, the ton of in-jokes, and the rather peculiar sense of humor, I think I would not recommend it to a friend looking fo short stories.

you're welcome zZzacha, i'm happy the list worked for you =)
i'm sure Norm (known as goatkeeper here) will be happy to hear it too. the new drabblecast b-sides should be interesting.

unfortunately, the same thing happens with my friends as yours. it's disappointing since we all talk about movies and tv shows but i can't talk about a cool podcast. at least everyone's got the forums. i promise you, if you want tell us about a podcast we'll all shout, "tell me more, please!"

the same thing kept me from voting for the cthulhu podcast. it's fantastic for fans of Lovecraft but unless you're ok with his ponderous writing style the stories can be pretty dry.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you... yes, that's the fairy tale.  I'm gearing up for an SF serial if I can get the start hammered out.

I'm sure you've already been farther downthread where I said how I enjoyed the story.   :)

I'm no longer subscribed to your feed, so I'll try to periodically check in on your site watching for the SF serial.

I'm the only person who voted for Well Told Tales?

I'm curious: are there people who have heard it and don't like it -- at least not well enough to make it though the "generic friend" filter -- or is it just that nobody has heard of it?

I still find "generic friend" difficult to apply.  None of my friends are generic...   ::)

I should probably give them another try.  But, yeah, I listened to an episode of it -- the one Rick Stringer from VF narrated about the gangsters and the alligators, and just didn't feel the story that much.  It was okay, but I only have so much time, and my podcast backlist feels overwhelming already.  But like I said, I will probably give them another try eventually.

I hadn't heard of most of the podcasts on the list.  Or rather, I've heard of some of them, via promos in other podcasts that I listen to, but hadn't bothered to check any of them out yet.

MeMeMe!!!! I love Well Told Tales! Only, I decided not to vote this poll, because I can never recommend anything to friends, because they don't seem to like audio fiction. If I had any real cool friends, I would recommend most of the podcasts.
Okay, I'll go and answer the question in the hypothetical situation that I had cool friends ;P

a) you didn't provide a link
2. that doesn't sound like a short story podcast

the first post here has been edited with your link. new links are added to the poll in batches since voting is reset when that happens.

Right...I guess I missed the part that says "short story podcast" in the topic.  I'm a stupid dummy sometimes.  Or most of the time.  My apologies. ;D
