Maybe this story started when Dad inherited the calabash; or maybe when my great-grandfather ran his thumb along its rugged surface, listening to the coins rattling within; or maybe even before then, when it was still green and growing, waiting to be plucked, carved and dried.

But for me, it started with an argument with my sister, Shadi.

Beautiful episode and new things to learn about culture!

I was just wondering about something in the intro - how can you be 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 cultures? If you assume that culture is passed on via your biological parents, it would have to be in increments of 2, so you could for instance be half Persian, half French. Or if your grandma if Persian and all other grandparents are French, you'd be 1/4 Persian, 3/4 French. I'm 3/8 German, 5/8 American for example (the American is a bit mixed, but mostly British). But 1/3 German, 2/3 American would not make sense.
Sorry, it's a bit pedantic, but as someone with a very international family, I think a lot about these questions.
