Are there really forums for everything?

I ask this, because I found a very surprising forum.  I was going through some shots from a trip to the zoo.  I try to take a shot of the signs to help me get the proper description.  I didn't have a one for this rooster that I saw.  I figured a few minutes on Wikipedia and I'd have it.  No luck.  A little googling got me a little help.  I'd narrowed it down to a couple of breeds and a couple of color schemes.

Then I found Backyard Chickens.  I started giggling my head off.  Then I was very confused.  They had over 16,000 registered users, we have less than 2000.  They had 170 members online when I was there, we had 5 at the same time.

To quote bdoomed when I showed him the site, "WTF!".  Is there really a forum for everything?

Can you make the link work?

Also, our neighbours have chickens that keep wandering through our yard, laying their so-called "eggs". It makes a change from urban London, I can tell you...

Keeping chickens can be fun - I have 3 currently...

http://iedaddy.wordpress.com/projects-around-the-house/the-chicken-coop/

The one problem with chickens...They're bloody territorial - it's almost impossible to introduce a new chicken to an established flock.  For those who say that Humans are the only animals that kill their own kind, they've never seen a flock of bored chickens out for a little blood sport.

we had a flock of 6 geese growing up.

geese are bigtime jerks, we learned.

But with four females we had more eggs than we could handle.

We had ducks in our backyard. Only occasionally eggs, lots of slimy green poop and they're the most horrible rapists. They also had the local cats cowed into submission.

The Great N-sh whispers in my ear, and he's talking about you.

We had chickens when we were growing up, about 40 of them.
I still have scars on my arms from gathering the eggs.

My point was that there were 170 people online on a sunday afternoon in a forums about chickens.  Also I was wondering what other weird forums are out there.

Everyone else's point - not really weird.

I have three chickens myself.  Granted, I don't care to read about them, I just think their eggs are tasty.  But I can see how someone would find the different breeds, keeping methods, etc, etc well worth reading and posting about.  It's practical too, unlike talking about SF stories.

I don't think keeping chickens is weird.  I'm not interested in doing the work for it, but if the kid next door wanted to do it, I'd finance it in exchange for eggs.  Given what I pay for non-industrial eggs, I'd get my money back in 8-10 months.

I also understand that people would talk about the best birds for their area and needs (eggs or meat or pet).  They would also want to ask questions about building and setting up the house.  This all makes sense.

Look at the forums.  There's a couple small sections dealing with these questions.  The rest of the place is about making them outfits and if their chicken needs prozac.

There is a tradition of literary groups.  People getting together to talk about books or stories or authors.  How many of us have heard about monthly groups to talk about the best way to make a tuxedo for your chicken.

If this doesn't strike you as a weird forum, show me ones that are weirder.

CHickens don't only have their own forums it seems: According to this story you can (or could) get magazines for specific breeds of chickens with circulations in the tens of thousands.

For those of you into vegan ice-cream, kombucha, and vegan baking...

Thos of you not familiar with kombucha, it's basically brewed/fermented tea... My wife has started brewing her own... here's a picture of the "scooby" which is some sort of culture used to make the stuff...

You might need a facebook account.
Facebook, apparently, is a social networking site like MySpace. The forums I've linked are for discussion of, and sharing tips about, the digital farms to save the rain forest. As Shwankie has explained it to me, you click to plant stuff, wait the prescribed length of time (1-3 days), click to harvest, click to sell. Use the 'money' you get to buy more stuff. The more active you are (sitting at your computer) the more money is donated to save the rain forest.
Yes. There is a thread about digital chickens.

So it kind of works like the freerice vocab game?  There's advertisements that pay for the donations?
