I am looking for either a hard SF movie, or an SF comedy ( on the order of galaxy quest, or spaceballs) to watch tonight after watching Chuck with my parents

I have been looking here but I am not quite sure where to start since there are quite a few movies there but so ya

Ice Pirates, Enemy Mine, Blade Runner, The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai, and Tron.

If you want specific feedback on these, let me know.

Ice Pirates, Enemy Mine, Blade Runner, The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai, and Tron.
Four of those are amongst my favourite science fiction movies ever. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to work out which one is the odd one out.

Then you have better taste than my guess would indicate.  I incuded Enemy Mine because I just bought it for my mom.

My guess is Tron.

After time for reflection,  I realized that Time Bandits is more in the line of a fantasy movie.  I know how people on this forum are very touchy about catagorizing their fiction. ;D  Me included.

But hey, it has midgets and Satan, and was wrote by a couple of Pythons,  and did I mention the midgets.

No.  And you also forgot to mention the midgets.

you know, just because it was written by a couple of pythons doesn't make it gold.  I HATED Jabberwocky.

Johnny Mnemonic.  I think it's as close as we are going to get to a Neuromancer movie.  And I love Henry Rollins part in it.

I love the vhs packaging on that, too!  Great movie.

Rollins was okay, but God, I hope we get a lot closer to Neuromancer than that (actually, I'd argue that we have, but that's another story). It wasn't just Keannu, but Dolph Lundgren's part was ridiculous, Dina Meyer was terrible, and the direction made Dungeons and Dragons look like LotR.  Shame, too, since Gibson's the one who wrote it.

I do wish they would try and tackle some more of his stuff, though.  Just with a more competent director.

Johnny Mnemonic is straight Cyberpunk.  As such, it's qulity is on par with most of the Cyberpunk/Shadow Run fiction I have experienced.

And it was written by Gibson as a prequel to Neuromancer, featuring some of the same characters. So it's got the Neuromancer chops. It;s just a shame they Keanu'd it.

Honestly, I'm glad you guys dug it.  For me, though, it just completely failed.  I wish I could pin it all on Keannu; usually I'm amused by him but this was easily one of his worst jobs.  It can't be all blamed on him.  The director had one or one film credit before, two music videos, and a Tales of the Crypt episode before making, and has had no credits since.  This movie literally ended his film career.

Like I said, I tried to like this. Twice.  I'm a big fan of the short story and most of Gibson's work.  But everything from the pacing, the acting, the characters, and the look just felt severely off to me.

The soundtrack, OTOH, had its merits...

I think Johny M. was one of the first movies to feature a full digital representation of an actor.  And a digital dolphin.  I feel bad for Gibson though, in this movie and in Neuromancer he used real numbers to quantify storage capacity that is ridiculously wrong (80 gigabyte in the movie and 4 MB of RAM in Neuromancer).  I have 80 gigabytes of movies and music in my pocket right now and didn't have to give up any short term memory to get it.

Just think of Johnny Mnemonic as a B movie, and you'll enjoy it.
