Escape Pod Flash Fiction Contest, Third Place: Karakuri

By Gideon Fostick.
Read by Dave Leckie.

Bill had no heart for this Karakuri, left behind in the empty house when his love had gone. Small and exquisite, propped at an angle on the tatami floor mat, it was the toughest puzzle he’d known.

Rated PG. Contains puzzles

I liked it.  I would have liked this one to be a full length 'cast.

Boy that word rep issue sure didn't improve in the audio format.  I thought it might, actually, making a sort of echo effect or giving the story a steady beat to follow on.  But no.  Nice enough little story and certainly didn't try my patience, which is one of the beauties of flash, but ultimately not destined to be a favorite and certainly not elevated by medium translation the way "Skyscrapers" was.

I liked it, although it could have ended with a sappy "whole new world" style speech. I would have liked it better that way.

This was odd, predictable, but good. I saw the ending coming, but still liked it.

Oh, great and mighty Alasdair, Orator Maleficent, He of the Silvered Tongue, guide this humble fangirl past jumping up and down and squeeing upon hearing the greatness of Thy voice.
Oh mighty Mur the Magnificent. I am not worthy.

This was my favorite of the recently-posted flash pieces.

Predictable, but fun.  And it was short enough that the predictability didn't bother me.
