So, as you might be able to tell from my posts, aside from fiction my other passion is music, music, music. I'd like to hear what you think about music, top 5 "artists" or whatever.

Mine would be:

1. Radiohead
2. The Smiths
3. The Beatles
4. The Magnetic Fields
5. GoodBooks.

What about you guys? Anyone else like music?

I've been on a strong Radiohead kick since OK Computer came out.

I can't really put them in order, but the five bands I most listen to (and have since I was a little kid in some cases) are -

Radiohead
Dead Kennedys
The Who
Urge Overkill
The Monkees

On any given day I might go on an Iron Maiden or Gwar or Tori Amos bender, or listen to just one album for a month and half like Morrissey's "You Are the Quarry", but I always go back to the five in my list.

Whenever I see another Radiohead fan, I can't help but smile, even though they are a well known band.

And I know what you mean about any given time. I went on a huge Sigur Ros fanship for a bit, but I find that I end up coming back to the same ten or so albums after a while.

I am not just a fan I am a Radiohead evangelist. I make playlists of older works for friends and family to set the tone for a CD like In Rainbows. I've always got OK Computer in my car CD changer, and I've burned copies for pretty much every CD player in the house (some of which I can't connect my iPod to).

I can understand what you mean about being an evangelist. Most people I meet regularly think I can go a bit over the top in the whole worship thing. A bit like the Church of Russell Nash in a way, but more musical.
I know it's sad and naive of me to say this, but I still can't find a band I wouldn't trade for Yorke and co.

In no particular order:  (favorite album, if there is one)

Collective Soul  (Disciplined Breakdown)
Anthrax, (Sound of White Noise)
Nickleback
Bobby Bare
Willie & Waylon

I like Flogging Molly and the Rednex, but have only heard one album from either.

Elliott Smith
Billy Joel
They Might Be Giants
The Beatles
Jill Sobule

I expect Jonathan Coulton would be on here too if I'd heard more than a song or two of his.

I could actually go on and on, picking a top 5 is just too hard. I love music.
A lot of my favorite music is just random songs from various artists, too, with no particular extra affinity for the artist.. I loathe Christina Aguilera, for instance, but I think 'Beautiful' is pretty swell.

I like radiohead a lot, but don't own any of their stuff.

The Doors
The Killers
Streetlight Manifesto
Dream Theater
Simian

Thats in order... but not really, the first three are kinda tied.

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?

Any opinion on Day and Age? I haven't heard more than a smattering of tracks, but it seems more like Hot Fuss than Sam's Town.

I am one of the few Killers fans that appreciated the overwroughtness of Sam's Town.

At any rate I'll be giving Day and Age to Cindy for Christmas.

My top 5 just at the moment:

Kenso
Masami Okui
U Totem (plus parent groups Motor Totemist Guild and 5uu's)
Thinking Plague
Slapp Happy / Henry Cow (those two groups were knit together pretty tightly for a while)

Only the first two or three in that list are likely to remain constant.  Kenso is probably my favorite group for all time, and Masami Okui is my favorite singer (though Dagmar Krause of Slapp Happy and Henry Cow is a strong contender, as is Emily Hay of U Totem).

interesting...
i loved both Hot Fuss and Sam's Town, there are only about 3 tracks between the two i dont care for.
sawdust sucked except for 2 songs which i LOVE
Day and Age i think is a combo of Hot Fuss and Sam's Town, leaning a bit more towards Sam's Town.
IMO.
a lot of the songs i did not like at first, but they grew on me.  quickly.

It's pretty much impossible to pick a mere five, but here are some that are probably in the top 20:

Flogging Molly
AC/DC
Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band
Man or AstroMan?
Love/Hate

There are only a couple of groups that are forever on my top list and they're:

Billy Joel
The Beatles
Ella Fitzgerald

The other two that would currently make the list are:

The Badlees
Ben Folds (mostly Ben Folds Five)

That could change before I even push the send button.

Hmm... my podcast backlog is a little too long, so I don't listen to a lot of music. When I do, though, the bands/musicians most likely to get called up are:

Sons of Korah
Drop Trio
Sibelian
James Morrison (the trumpet player, not the lizard king)
Eli

I think my #1 favorite band this year is more a combination because the lead singer of one started another band that I like equally: Something Corporate/Jack's Mannequin. Kind of emo, I know, but I like the sound.

The rest resolve somehow into:

Counting Crows
Better than Ezra
Tori Amos
Jonathan Coulton
Billy Joel
Cake
TATU (I like their sound)

Hmmmm...
These aren't my All-Time favourites (like Beatles, Cream, Led Zeppelin, the Who and the like), but the ones that are getting the most frequent iPod play over tha last couple of months:
- Daikaiju - Thanks to EP for the heads up.
- Insect Surfers - coupla' downloads here - http://www.insectsurfers.com/mp3.htm
- The TomorrowMen (particularly "Chronosurf")
- The Detonators
- The Penetrators

Mostly I'm playing Surf and Instro stuff, individual sample tunes I got for free here and there on the interwebs.
"Surfguitar101.com forum" sampler compilations:
- http://www.archive.org/details/SG101_2006_MP3_Compilation
- http://www.archive.org/details/SG1012007MP3 and a couple of demos gleaned from the Downloads section

There's buried treasure everywhere.

But it's not all Surf, oh no.
Chamber music by Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré. A bit of Debussy too.

- Chirgilchin : Tuvan throatsingers, from Western Mongolia. I saw them in concert last year in a small venue. Amazing stuff.

- I regularly check out Julia Nunes' Youtube videos - Sings, play ukulele, and talks. She's such a breath of fresh air. Especially like her covers of "Flagpole Sitta", Her Majesty, and "The End of the World As We Know It"

I feed The Pod.

Coming into this a bit late.  There's really two bands/artist that I'm NUTS for and everyone else is second-tier.

1) U2
2) Bruce Springsteen (The song from the Wrestler? Makes me teary-eyed everytime I've heard it.)

I have a very big second tier. This is just a sampling:

Muse (although they could shortly become #3 in the top tier)
Sarah McLachlan
Chamberlain
Dropkick Murphys
Coldplay
Radiohead
VAST
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Also, lately I've been going gah-gah for The Hold Steady and Abney Park.

Even later here.

1.  Cat Stevens, including the 2nd Yusuf album but not the first

After that, in no particular order in alphabetical order.
(That's what I get for using iTunes as my reference.):

Annie Lennox
Beatles
Beau Brummels
Enya
Manhattan Transfer
Mannheim Steamroller
Monkees
Rockapella
ZZ Top

Restricting myself to bands that haven't already been mentioned (which cuts things down substantially -- Escape Artists listeners have good taste), some artists in heavy rotation on my MP3 player are:

(with albums in parentheses where they significantly outplay the artist's other works)
(plus a nod to Jeff Buckley, who's been given a bump in my affections recently by Simon Cowell's evil cover of Hallelujah)

I love Jeff's version of the song!  I first heard it on West Wing when C.J.'s secret service agent was killed, and the scene tore me apart, so hearing the song always brings on strong emotion. Of course, I cry at the slightest thing.  Even this Pepsi commercial (YouTube) makes me choke up every time (though in a good way).  It's the boy's giggles and the puppies...  :'(

GoodBooks - Control
Oasis (sorry) - Definitley Maybe
Bon Iver- For Emma Forever Ago
Neutral Milk Hotel- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
R.E.M. - Document and Automatic For the People (two best albums IMO)

I was helping out in my son's kindergarten class.  The teacher had turned on the radio to some Star somethingorother station.  At the end of the night I said, "remind me to bring my iPod next time and we can have some good music."  She said she didn't really like the station either and asked me what I liked.  I said, "I like pretty much everything using real instruments with real singing.  Bonus points if they wrote it themselves."

She took this attitude and said, "oh, like Coldplay?"  It was so obvious that she had this one group in her head that was on the top 20 stations, but also had that alternative pedigree.  The "so there attitude" was so heavy that I just shut down.  I just can't handle people who judge music by the number of sales.

Judging music by sales is like judging books by sales. Look at the abused-kiddie-memoir crap that made it onto the laughinglycalled Book charts. What's going to sell will be the most acessible/catchy stuff, but that doesn't always mean it's the best.

Heh. A little Oasis is sooooo much fun.

My brother-in-law just hooked me up with the Bon Iver. I'm really enjoying it.  Very, very mellow.

Also really enjoyed R.E.M.'s Accelerate album. It feels like the most R.E.M. thing they've done since Automatic.  (Although I liked some of their other recent stuff, too.)

I do have a good reason for bumping this thread: my friend and I tried an interesting musical experiment which I think is a good idea in the age of iPod/iTunes...

what you do is back up your library onto DVDs or CDs (or external HD, see if I care) and then sync your iPod with your friend's library and listen to their music for a week... it's simple, but it can introduce you to some good bands. particularly when your friends have FAR OUT tastes :)

iTunes is made of ass.  Unfortunately, attempts to implement Songbird as a replacement have met with failure.

I refuse to use iTunes.  It makes it a real pain in the ass to subscribe to some 'casts, though.

Mostly I hate Apple's bullshit policy of pushing more Apple software on me that I don't need, don't want, and have to be vigilant against in order to avoid having it snuck onto my system.  Oh, and forcing their useless bullshit Quicktime on me as a requirement to run iTunes.

Apple does a couple of things right with iTunes, but all the negative crap so vexes me that I'm desperate for a working alternate solution that will support smart playlists and load content onto my iPod.

Try some of the tips here

Thanks for trying, but not what I'm looking for.

Quote
App Store Browses the iTunes Store Without iTunes
I don't care about the iTunes Store.  I have no use for it.

Quote
Trim the Bloat from iTunes 8 on Windows
I want to dump iTunes altogether.

Quote
TotalTunes Control Swallows the Best iTunes Add-Ons
Uses iTunes (see above) plus I don't run a Mac.

Again, I'm looking for something like Songbird but which 1) treats smart playlists as playlists when they display on the iPod, and 2) makes the files playable on the iPod.  Songbird has fallen down on both of these when I tried it, so I'm still stuck with Apple's crapware.

I agree with stEPH, I don't want all the additional software, and I don't like the way iTunes tries to hijack my files.  I don't have an iPod, I have a cheap, $20 mp3 player.

I'm going to try and bring this back to topic.

My son has started requesting songs on his own playlist.  If he hears something he really likes, he tells me to put it on his list.  Here is what we have so far:

  • The Beatles
    • Yellow Submarine
    • When I'm Sixty-Four
  • Billy Joel
    • Angry Young Man (live)
    • Leningrad
    • I've Loved These Days
  • Blood, Sweat & Tears
    • You've Made Me So Very Happy
    • Spinning Wheel
  • Chicago
    • Fancy Colours
  • The Coasters
    • The Lion Sleeps Tonight
  • The Cranberries
    • In The Ghetto
  • Dave Brubeck Quartet
    • Take Five
  • Ella Fitzgerald
    • Mack The Knife
  • Elton John
    • Grey Seal
  • The Everly Brothers
    • Wake Up Little Suzie
  • Jewel
    • Sometimes It Be That Way [live]
  • Los Lobos
    • La Bamba (Richie Valens cover)
  • Sasha Dobson
    • Without You
  • Tom Brosseau
    • Fork in the Road

(a noble effort to un-de-rail the thread, n-sh)

he's got a pretty eclectic taste. has he heard the rest of Revolver or just Yeller Submarine? (because that's an amazing album)

I've been trying to get friends and family into Radiohead and The Smiths, but it's not working well. I've made a killer introductory playlist to the both, though, worth trying out if you're new to either.

I tried to limit it at 16 tracks:

1. Planet Telex
2. The Bends
3. This Charming Man
4. Handsome Devil
5. Ask
6. Panic
7. Myxomatosis
8. Airbag
9. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
10. Karma Police
11. There is A Light That Never Goes Out
12. How To Disappear Completely
13. Let Down
14. Bigmouth Strikes Again
15. Wolf At The Door
16. Pyramid Song

you see this is not the best of playlist, which would look A LOT different, but merely the most accesible songs.
For me, trying to list my favourite Radiohead songs is just impossible as I love so much of what they've done, and it's fast becoming the same for The Smiths. So instead I just make combinations that work well together. I made a best of Radiohead playlist that ran to 200 tracks once, which is pretty amazing. I think it's wonderful to be so in love with one band, but that's not to say I wouldn't enjoy expanding the music I listen to- otherwise I do tend to end up missing out on a lot of great music. Neil Young I didn't pick up on until I actively forced myself to LOOK FOR OTHER MUSIC :P

I don't play things for him.  When I'm not listening to podcasts, I turn on music.  I still use CDs, so the full albums are in there.  It's just a question of what comes up on shuffle.

I have to say I'm guilty of not using CDs as much as I should do. I tend to only listen to my favourite albums on CD, and then not in the right order. Which is something I should do more often.

I raided Ebay to get a pair of Sony Juke Box CD changers.  One holds 300 discs and the other holds 200.  I can put both machines on shuffle.  The 200 player slaves to the 300.  They then alternate songs.  While one is playing, the other switched discs and picks the next track.  It's like putting my music list in iTunes on shuffle, but with better sound.

I refuse to narrow my choices down!  I don’t think it’s physically possible.  I like so much varied music from so many different genres.  Currently? I’m deeply in love with Nickel Creek- I have almost everything from them.  However, I go through these cycles of liking one artist- or just one or two songs from another artist.   Stuff I listen to varies on my mood- what I’m doing, what I’m writing what I’m studying!  All time spans, all types of music, anything that catches my frenzied brief attention is up for grabs.  My music library on I tunes is currently a mix of World music (IZ, Flogging Mollys, Tartanic, etc) "pop", Rock, even a little rap/hip hop.

Oh, great and mighty Alasdair, Orator Maleficent, He of the Silvered Tongue, guide this humble fangirl past jumping up and down and squeeing upon hearing the greatness of Thy voice.
Oh mighty Mur the Magnificent. I am not worthy.

Oooooooo. Nickel Creek. Good stuff.

I'm probably the only U2 nut on the forums, but I thought I'd point out here that they are streaming their new album from their myspace page, even though the album comes out two weeks from now.

I've listened to it once. I dig it. But they'd have to really drop the ball to leave me unhappy.

Some artists to check out, for those looking to broaden their music experience.  I'm just going to briefly discuss or give a song of their that I like.

Beer Bottle Junkies, ok, they are friends of mine, but they are pretty good, just search for them on myspace.

Robert Earl Keen.  If you don't know who he is, you've still probably heard some of his stuff.  I don't know how I managed it, but I missed both Alice's Restaurant wiki, by Arlo Guthrie and Merry Christmas from the Family link in 2008.  I played Merry Christmas from the Family in January for Tinkerbell.  Check out The Road Goes on Forever here.

Joe Ely.  He has covered a lot of Robert Earl Keen's stuff and performed a lot of them with REK.  He has a similar sound.

Johnny Horton.  Sink the Bismarck link is one of my favorites, but I like almost everything he did.

Joe Walsh.  Life's Been Good link.  Anything Joe Walsh did rawks.  He was in Drew Carey's band.

Violent Femmes.  While Blister in the Sun link is probably their most famous song, give Kiss Off link a listen and for something creepy check out Country Death Song link.

Collective Soul.  Disciplined Breakdown wiki his my favorite album of all time, listen to the whole thing.  It is my zone out album and the album I listen to when sorting out my emotions.  The World I Know here is a great song, too.

Queen.  You can't go wrong with Queen.  My favorite?  Bicycle Race here.

Peter, Paul and Mary.  Go give Puff, the Magic Dragon here another listen.  It is one of the saddest songs ever.  It is NOT about marijuana

John Conlee.  I love his style.  It's probably too country for most, but I Don't Remember Loving You here is a really good song that should be heard at least once.

I'm going to come back to this post and add links later.

::edit::  Added links, didn't verify a lot of them, so if they're crappy, let me know and I'll pt a better one in.

If you like their acoustic album and The World I know, you will probably enjoy Disciplined Breakdown.  There weren't many of the songs off of it played on the radio, that I am aware of.  I must have bought 3 copies of the cassette and 2 copies of the CD.  In the truck, cassettes are better than CDs, as there is too much vibration.  Now that I have an mp3 player, things are better, but I've worn out the cassettes.

Let me know if you hear it and what you think.  I would listen to it a time or two before reading the lyrics.  It's amusing to see what you thought were the words...

I've been taking Jazz 201 at Jazz at Lincoln Center through my college, so what I've been listening to lately has been heavily influenced by that. From the NO Jazz tradition I've been listening to Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver, from the Swing era Ellington and Basie, some areas of Miles Davis I hadn't listened to before, and then Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. The class has been great, and I've got a long list of songs to get once I actually have some cash for iTunes.

Apart from Jazz, the only other music I've been listening too lately is Amanda Palmer and the Dr. Horrible soundtrack.

I Twitter. I also occasionally blog on the Escape Pod blog, which if you're here you shouldn't have much trouble finding.

A few more off the top of my head:

Dr. Hook, Shel Silverstein (he wrote A LOT of songs and performs a few), David Allan Coe, Marty Robbins, Chris Ledux (Stampede gives me chills), Red Sovine (if you feel like tearing up), Meat Loaf (Paradise by the Dashboard Lights is the ultimate pinball song), Steve Earl (even though he's sobered up, he still has talent), Bobby Bare (Tequila, Shelia and The Winner are 2 of my favorites), and Genesis.

He also performed with Dr Hook.  I Was Stoned and I Missed It is pretty fun.  He was actually a fascinating person.  He would not let any of his work be published unless he approved of the format.  He felt that it wasn't only the words that were important, but also the feel and texture of the paper.

Pinball? What pinball?
There's the baseball game on the radio thing, but not pinball, in any version I've ever heard.

Pinball Wizard is a good song, but not for playing pinball.  You need to get in a rythym when playing pinball and that just doesn't cut it.
