arguing with someone online over high functioning autism and AS (which I've been diagnosed with), and here's a quote from this guy after I took offence at him calling autistic people "mentally insane":

Ok my word choice may have been a little off, but surely you can see that it's a genuine concern that these people are now infiltrating society.

...

I cannot believe how angry this makes me. I hope this guy is making some kind of joke. If he really has these opinions then why is he trying to get me on his side, and view myself and people like me as infiltrating society?

Are there meetings?

At least there have been some pretty good positive portrayals of people with Aspergers on TV lately — Boston Legal and Grey's Anatomy. But yes, there are idiots at all levels (for example, the Israeli army and D&D).

I Twitter. I also occasionally blog on the Escape Pod blog, which if you're here you shouldn't have much trouble finding.

Maybe it's your username (if you use the same one)  ;)   just trying to cheer you up.

No, I know very little about autism.  The comment is in poor tast.  They may be trying to make a point that autism is being over-diagnosed, but there are better ways of making the point.

Facehuggers don't have heads!

Come with me and Journey Into... another fun podcast

nah, i'm bug over there :p
but thanks for the joke...

i'm probably going to calm down now. It's clear the guy made a comment that he regretted or he doesn't know what he's talking about- either way I have no reason to care too much.

People are dumb.  (Sorry for giving spoilers about the human race; hope you've already seen it.)

One of the main characters from The Big Bang is a classic example of AS.

"Infiltrate society"?????  That is the funniest thing I've ever heard.  Some people are so stupid, they're funny.

I don't watch the show.  They looked at it on NPR.  The clips they played were classic examples of AS.
