EP Flash: The Sincerest Form

Bars of light crossed my desk, carved from the sun by the open window. The scent of hot asphalt rose from the path that led to the capitol buildings.

Beside me, Dr. Singh motioned for the guards to bring in Dr. Norman Terriault. He looked pale. I motioned for him to sit.

The guards stood on either side. The officer saluted.

I closed the window. A faint buzzing hovered in the air.

“Why me?” Terriault asked.

“You must be familiar with the work of the Imitant Office,” Singh consulted his tablet, “Dr. Terriault.”

“I’m just like both of you.” Terriault leaned forward, the guards pulled him back.

“Apparently,” I said.

Rated PG. Low intensity inter-species conflict.

Predictable, but fun.

My complaint is about the sound quality.  Alasdair has sounded better; the recording sucked on both this and the EP that he recently hosted ("Exhalation", I believe).

This went too long.  I think it could have been shortened by about 10% and would have worked much better.  The sound quality was lacking, the levels were way low.  I have a lot of noise in the truck when listening, so sound quality is important to me.

I agree about the sound quality.  I tend to listen to podcasts while on the bus or walking down busy city streets, and I really strained to hear this one.  Which is strange, because usually I have no trouble hearing Alasdair-narrated stories.

I enjoyed it, possibly it helped that I was alone at work before the rest of the staff turned up. I expected the twist with the doctor being a mimic but not the second twist of the main person being one too.

I'll have to relisten, but I assumed the doctor was not a mimic.

The doctor was not a mimic - the narrator set him up, as the doctor knew the person he was mimicking well and was therefore a threat.

Didn't the doctor burst into a cloud of bugs when they tried to cart him off?

Ok, this can get confusing because *all* the characters in the story are titled doctor. So, here's a brief outline:


*MAJOR SPOILERS*





- Dr. Norman Terriault (the physticist) was really a cloud of bugs.

- Dr. Singh (the guy who did most of the interrogation) was set up by the narrator.

- Dr. Jason Spinrest (the head of the anti-mimic unit) was being mimicked, then eaten, by the narrator.

I was thinking a 1984ish situation where there actually aren't any mimics would be scarier.

Fun, but the "twist" was used half a dozen times in the story before being used as the twist so I saw it coming a mile away.
