It appears to be mostly the "Princess of Mars" debut story, and not the really lame novella of the same title that wound up the Burroughs series.
This was kicked around for a while now.

The studio has a long-standing arrangement with the DGA in which only the organization's members may direct Paramount films. He was replaced with director Kerry Conran, who had just finished Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004). In 2005, Conran left the project and was replaced by Jon Favreau just before the release of Favreau's movie Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005).

Sadly, I don't see Frazetta's name in the crew now. Not sure if I would bother to go see it if he's not involved.
