Say what you will about the quality of the sequels, the club scene from the original is one of the best things done in a vampire movie.

All cat stories start with this statement: “My mother, who was the first cat, told me this...”

Watching the club scene reminded me of everything that was good and bad about techno.  Blade was on cable over the Holidays and made me think why the hell aren't they rebooting Blade. I know he appeared in Spiderman, so they could slip him in somewhere even if it were just in a crowd scene.  I think he fought Morbius.  Were they good movies?  probably not, but they were fun movies in much the same way the Underworld movies were.

I appreciate the scene as it establishes vampires as another society that is completely Other as well as pervasive and large enough to inspire despair. Something that was never effectively done with, say, an Anne Rice inspired film.

Other than Armand's theater group in Paris, I don't remember a large group of vampires in Anne Rice, they were always more solitary.

That's actually a buddy from High School as Sam the Muppet Trooper.  He's part of Great Lakes Garrison of the 501st.
