What is this?  There's a DVD of it at the local video shop and I'm wondering if it's a movie or a re-packaging of the miniseries.   
NOTE: I'm in Japan where many DVDs are repackaged American TV shows.  So I'm thinking this is the case since if it were a movie like Razor, I would have seen it on Amazon or something.

I'd guess it's the original series or the miniseries. Were there any visuals on the box?

My money is on it being the pilot for Caprica.

There is a prequel coming (prequel series I think), set on Caprica before "certain events" occur and play out throughout the BSG series.
(from memory) it will heavily feature the Adama clan and the creation of certain artificial humanoid robots....

And it has 'that guy who was a hologram in Quantum Leap'/'that guy who was Cavil', too.

It came out on DVD a little while back. It's good, if sometimes pornographic.
