Reading Rainbow. :( :( :( :( :( :(

I grew up on this show. It infuriates me to no end that the Bush Administration's vile 'No Child Left Behind' helped influence it's demise.

Absolutely reprehensible. I'm so pissed.

Look, if you're going to criticize someone, at least do it accurately.

Linda Simensky, vice president for children's programming at PBS, says that when Reading Rainbow was developed in the early 1980s, it was an era when the question was: "How do we get kids to read books?"

Since then, she explains, research has shown that teaching the mechanics of reading should be the network's priority.

"We've been able to identify the earliest steps that we need to take," Simensky says. "Now we know what we need to do first. Even just from five years ago, I think we all know so much more about how to use television to teach."

Research has directed programming toward phonics and reading fundamentals as the front line of the literacy fight. Reading Rainbow occupied a more luxurious space — the show operated on the assumption that kids already had basic reading skills and instead focused on fostering a love of books.

By just blaming Bush, you are leaving the impression that he cut funding.

The show's run is ending, Grant explains, because no one — not the station, not PBS, not the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — will put up the several hundred thousand dollars needed to renew the show's broadcast rights.

Ok, so the reason the show is ending is because nobody wants to pay the fees to renew broadcast rights.  Here's a thought, if it's so very important to you:  Organize an effort to raise the money to keep the show on the air.  I am certain that it wouldn't be necessary to raise the entire amount.  If people care enough to donate even half the funds, PBS might reconsider.

I am an opponent of the No Child Left Behind philosophy.  But the "we can blame Bush because he's Bush" is as bad as "we can blame Obama because he's Obama."

Come on, how can a policy where when our education system is failing to educate the children for whatever reason, be it school violence, lack of funding, etc, be to lower the standards to pass rather than actually improving the education system be bad.  It's not like the generation that "weren't left behind" has to lead our country one day.  We don't need scientists, engineers, doctors, etc.  And it's been obvious for at least the last 20 years that you don't need an education to be a politician.  How could this be bad.

I thought the article spoke for itself that it wasn't a direct accusation. I do apologize for not being clearer. The article itself made it clear it was only one factor.
I probably should have left my editorializing out and commented purely on the demise of a great show.

I absolutely loathe NCLB and so does every teacher I've ever mentioned it to - its widely acknowledged it's damaged the educational system - so consider this more of a strike out against that, than against Bush persay. Still, perhaps innapropriate.

Talia, by all means come over to this thread and totally go after NCLB.  Please offer some better choices, though.

I will totally blame Bush and the Republican party.  In their effort to squash all contrary opinions they further gutted the funding for CPB.  Their argument being that sesame street makes a lot of money so why should they pay for the product.  Boeing also makes a lot of money, but they didn't mind buying a crap load of f-22s that we didn't need.

Would you please stop saying "we" when speaking of MY country?  You chose to leave and are obviously happier where you are.

My Passport (seen one of those before) says United States of America across the front.  It also lists my place of birth as Bethesda, Maryland.  Therefore it is OUR country.

The Secretary of Defense requested the funding be cut for the F-22 as one of his first acts in office.  He stated that it was a plane WE didn't need.

Hey, Nash, how much do you pay in taxes to MY government?

Jason,

I wasn't bashing YOUR government. I was bashing YOUR POLITICAL PARTY.  I bash YOUR POLITICAL STANCE.  I supported the decision of YOUR SECRETARY OF DEFENSE.  I attacked YOUR IGNORANT ASS COMMENT about it being only your country when I was commenting about the party that is no longer in power.

Your comment was the same as the gun rights idiots.  "You don't like that we have the right to carry assault rifles to church.  Then you can leave the country."  You say you're not a R or D, but you take it personally anytime someone makes comments against the party.  If you can't handle a back and forth about political ideas, stop getting into political discussions.  YOUR PARTY suffered a series of embarrassing defeats this past election for a reason.

I bring up the way things are here to contrast them against the way things are in the states.  It makes no sense for me to write in this forum about the joke that is separation of church and state in Germany.  Who the hell would care?  But I bet every new mother and mother-to-be in the states would love to hear that the healthcare system in Germany includes coverage for midwife who comes out to the house to check on baby and mother about 8 times before and after the birth.

Outside of the processing of my tax forms this year I cost the United States government $0.00.  What about you?

This got out of hand, so it's locked for a bit until people cool down.

I Twitter. I also occasionally blog on the Escape Pod blog, which if you're here you shouldn't have much trouble finding.

I was out of line.  I apologized to Nash, but will do so again publicly.

I'm sorry.  I did to you what I get upset about people doing to me.

Now that heads have cooled and we are all a happy forum family again, could any of the mods split the political discussion/shouting out of this thread? I for one would much prefer that this thread remains devoted to memories of those who have passed away this year, and not go off on tangents (note - this request is entirely independant of the nature of the tangent; I would have made the same request if there had been a page of friendly discussion of the mechanics of flower-pressing. I just didn't want to request this while tempers were flaring).

SPLIT!
tho i'd like this thread to just stop here, so I is gonna lock it.  this conversation/battle/war/argument doesn't need to continue.

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?
