Perhaps that's not the reveal and the author knew you knew from the very start...

I wasn't a fan of this story. It felt a bit slow, and although I usually love shocking reveals ending the story, this one just didn't do it to me. I spent 20 minutes listening to how a guy was slowly rotting, the reveal at the end that he was very rotted was a foregone conclusion.


I don't know that the ending was necessarily shocking, or that the twist was meant to be him being very rotted. The story was called "Necrosis" for a reason, that bit is revealed entering the piece, and plays more to the themes of neglect, degeneration, and the mystery of Conlon's final quote, which left me quite affected. Like electricpaladin said, it could be that they've all been infected without their knowledge, that they've all been accomplice to a hideously slow death together, or something even darker and suspect, something we must simply wonder about. Whispers of an occult or a grand mystery.

Altogether, I thought it was a lovely piece. Certainly a recent favorite.
