Location: Denver, CO Area
Start Date: August 18, 2025
Duration: Through End of October (Possible Extension through November)
Schedule: Part-Time, 0.6 FTE (Approx. 24 hours/week)
Compensation: $50-$65/hour (based on experience)
We are seeking a
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) for a
part-time, school-based position in the Denver, CO area. This is a temporary assignment to cover a leave, beginning
August 18 and continuing through the
end of October , with the possibility of extension through
November (not guaranteed).
This role supports students across
13 school sites , serving grades
3-12 as well as a
transition program for young adults. The position is
0.6 FTE (approximately 24 hours per week), and travel between sites is required.
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist Key Responsibilities: - Provide direct instruction in orientation and mobility skills to students with visual impairments
- Develop and implement individualized goals aligned with each student's IEP
- Conduct functional mobility assessments and environmental safety evaluations
- Teach safe travel techniques including cane use, sighted guide, environmental awareness, and public transportation navigation
- Support students' independence in accessing school and community environments
- Collaborate with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), classroom staff, and families to promote skill carryover
- Travel between schools to deliver services according to student needs
- Participate in IEP meetings and provide progress updates and recommendations
- Maintain accurate service records and progress documentation
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist Qualifications: - Current COMS certification through ACVREP
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation & Mobility or related field
- Experience working with K-12 students and transition-age youth preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently across multiple sites
- Reliable transportation and valid driver's license required
- Understanding of IDEA, IEP processes, and school-based service delivery
