The Auburn Police Department seeks motivated officers with varied law enforcement experience in patrol, crime prevention, traffic, and investigations. Staffed by 25 sworn and 11 professional staff, the Department provides police personnel opportunities in patrol services, investigative services, special assignments, dispatch, records and administration.

Located at the crossroads of Interstate 80 and Highway 49, Auburn is the County Seat of Placer County as well as the home of the California Welcome Center. The city is located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at elevations between 1,000 and 1,500 feet above sea level. Auburn’s location provides the advantage of being above the valley fog and below the Sierra snow line.

Ideal Candidate

This recruitment is for lateral or academy graduate candidates only. To be considered, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications and criteria:

• Peace Officers are subject to the California POST minimum selection standards.  Candidates must be a high school graduate or equivalent, be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment and possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid driver's license.
• Lateral candidates must have successfully completed a POST-approved Field Training Program and possess a current California POST Basic Certificate.
• Academy Graduate candidates must possess a current California POST-certified Basic Training Academy graduation certificate, obtained within the last three years.
• Officers must maintain sufficient strength and agility necessary to perform the duties of a Police Officer and live within a reasonable response time of the Department.

A successful candidate will have knowledge of criminal law with particular emphasis on the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons accused of felonies and misdemeanors and understand rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence in court.

Skills and knowledge needed for success include basic criminal investigation procedures and techniques, including crime scene investigation, interrogation, fingerprinting, and booking and the use and care for firearms and police equipment.

The selected incumbent will have demonstrated keen abilities of observations and memory, accurate incident and case report preparation and meet established standards of physical endurance, agility, health, and vision.

Compensation

• Holiday In-Lieu: 5% pay
• Uniform Allowance: $1,000 per year
• Special Assignments: 5% pay
• Graveyard Shift: 5% pay
• Longevity Pay:
• Starts at 5% at 10 years of service (prior experience may transfer)
• POST Certificate Pay (up to 7.5%):
• 2.5% for Intermediate
• 5% for Advanced
• Bachelor’s Degree: 5% pay
• Tuition Reimbursement: Up to $1,200 per year
• Compensation time off

Retirement and Benefits

• CalPERS Retirement:
  • Classic members: 2% @ 50
  • PEPRA members: 2.7% @ 57
  • Employee pays normal contribution plus 3% cost share
• 457 deferred compensation: City contribution up to $120 per month (non-match)
• CalPERS medical with generous city contribution or cash waiver of $890 per month
• City paid dental and vision plans
• $50k life insurance
• On-duty fitness program
• Voluntary plans include long-term disability, life insurance, critical illness, accident, and FSA medical and dependent care options

Paid Leaves

• Vacation leave up to 184 hours annually, accruals starting at 96 hours and increasing with years of service  (prior years of service may be applied for lateral hires, subject to approval)
• Vacation leave cash-out program
• Sick leave accrues 96 hours annually
• 5% holiday in-lieu pay for shift with time and one-half for Thanksgiving or Christmas shifts
