Title: The Thread for Silly Web Links

Come on...  You've all got 'em.  You can't wait to share them.  Here's the place.

My List O'links!

Rooster Teeth produces amusing videos they made in Halo. Very funny. Worth checking out. I’m not a Halo fan, but I love these videos.

http://rvb.roosterteeth.com/home.php

The Flying Spaghetti Monster, a satire on intelligent design or a world religion? Does it really matter? This is kind of pimping myself here, as I wrote an essay in the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti monster. I think that makes me one of his chosen Prophets, but as you are allowed to be very lazy in this particular religious faith, I think it’s okay that I’ve been rather lax in spreading the word. I hope this link satisfies his noodlyness.

Cute Overload. It’s my secret shame that I like to look at, as my roommates say, “cute porn”. It’s not really porn of course, unless your subjective definition includes frolicking kittens and tiny turtles. Due to the number of hits it gets and the web awards, I am not alone in my love for this site.

www.cuteoverload.com

Furmentation is one of my favorite webcomics. It’s an epic about hamsters. Really.

No, I’m not kidding.

Even though most of my family are Mac users, many of them are totally baffled by even the simplest operations.

So I send them this link -

And tell them I have made reservations in their name.

Several of my regular ports of call:

www.angels2200.com
Currently being rebuilt following a server crash.  Stunningly good science fiction webcomic dealing with the crew of a decrepit carrier, being sent into a mission far more complicated and dangerous than they were led to believe.  Sort of Battlestar Galactica, but with more humour.

www.warrenellis.com
English comic writer and now novelist.  His website is currently a rolling research blog of photos, music, movies, current affairs and websites.  If you don't like what's on there in the morning, check back at night, chances are it will all have changed.

www.smashingtelly.com
A links page describing itself as linking to 'the best free movies and TV programs available on the web'.  It's all either google video or youtube stuff and the variety is astonishing.  A documentary about ghosts on the London Underground sits next to coverage of the Web 2.0 conference at Davos and just up from The Day The Earth Stood Still.  Oh and the Turkish version of Star Wars.  Updated daily.

http://www.comics.com/comics/getfuzzy/
Rob's dog Satchel is an amiable, perpetually hungry idiot.  Rob's cat Bucky is a 1 foot nothing ball of hate, so angry his ears are back ALL THE TIME.  Inspired lunacy and the only website you'll ever see featuring a cat duct taping a phone to himself.

www.marvinsuicide.org
Host of one of Resonance FM's regular shows.  Not only are they worth your time but Marvin's own website is a vital stop for anyone interested in new music.  He's been doing this for over a hundred shows, the first 110 of which are archived on the site with complete track listings and details of where to download the tracks from.  Marvin is dedicated to tracking down the best new, free music on the internet and he does a fantastic job of it.  An essential site for music fans.

www.shortpacked.com
Up until eighteen months ago, I ran an asylum which looked, to all intents and purposes, like a comic shop.  Shortpacked, whilst set in a toy shop, gives me regular moments of sweaty palmed recognition as well as making me laugh.  A lot.

While running through the hallways of an Oregon middle school, two boys slapped a few girls' butts and are now facing a lifetime on the sex offender registry.

This quote disturbed me the most:

"It's basically the end of their lives," (the attorney) said. "Everywhere they go and everything they do, they will have to disclose this. And these kids who do these minor offenses have to follow the same sex-offender registration requirements as someone who brutally raped someone."

It's a really good article.

I am not passing judgment in either direction on this, just passing on the link.  If it starts spawning a discussion, could a moderator spawn it off into its own thread?

My friends just had a baby on Saturday afternoon, after a week of contractions (she was one week overdue as of the 18th).  The people the hospital contracted out to do the baby photography took three shots of her.

One of my friends' friends made a YTMND of the three shots.  Turn your sound down first, as is customary with any YTMND.

That baby has some seriously long fingers, but then, both parents are musicians.

It's a very cute story, but the sound mix is atrocious (it's NBC's fault; I checked) and the vet they talked to looks like she's on drugs.  (No offense if anyone knows her.)

Slowly addictive, like Lemmings was.  Tends to drown my lowly 0.5Gb laptop in a swap-thrashing tide of Flash garbage collection after wave 180 or so, which is annoying for a mere web game.  So make sure you've got a powerful machine before you get too good at it.

I had my mohawk trimmed yesterday.  I shortened the top to about 2 inches and left the back long.  It's not really a 'hawk anymore, kind of a cross between a mohawk and a mullet.  I mentioned on twitter that I need to dye it again (purple this time) and have a new follower now.

There are some kewl 'hawks.  I like the AC/DC one on the main page.

Finding other examples of similar items where you can't quite put your finger on what they have in common, or don't know what the genre is called.

I typed in a couple of titles of movies that I liked, and got a short list of other movie titles. All of them were ones that I am (or had been) vaguely interested in seeing.

It did not do as well when I typed in a few titles of my favourite surf guitar tunes.

Silly fun web game:

Broken Picture Telephone (http://www.brokenpicturetelephone.com/)

First one person writes some text on a virtual post-it-note.  Then the next player has to use crude drawing tools (akin to virtual crayons) to draw it.  Third player describes the picture in text.  Forth draws that.  And so on.

Here's an example of a game I started (http://www.brokenpicturetelephone.com/view?id=6334), or one that features my crude art skills (http://www.brokenpicturetelephone.com/view?id=6409).

This Boing Boing post is full of Win: Dramatic readings of message-board posts about atheism from Christian fundamentalist message boards (http://www.boingboing.net/2009/03/30/dramatic-readings-of.html)

ETA: The linked site (http://www.fstdt.com/fundies/top100.aspx?archive=1) is even more full of win. Choice quote:
Quote from: awesomestnerd, SmashBoards [Comments (442) [2005-Nov-07
One of the most basic laws in the universe is the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This states that as time goes by, entropy in an environment will increase. Evolution argues differently against a law that is accepted EVERYWHERE BY EVERYONE. Evolution says that we started out simple, and over time became more complex. That just isn't possible: UNLESS there is a giant outside source of energy supplying the Earth with huge amounts of energy. If there were such a source, scientists would certainly know about it. [emphasis added]

ETA: Note: Also a lot of sadness. It's funny until kids get involved.

Hah.
You haven't seen Chris Cunningham's Rubber Johnny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3far9oHZOsI)? - Go ahead, with the room lights out, headphones or speakers at moderate level, and in full-screen mode.
Definitely not a kid's show.

See if your favourite badass is there - http://www.badassoftheweek.com/list.html

The most entertaining part is the enthusiastic description, such as for Molly the Cow (http://www.badassoftheweek.com/molly.html).

I see your "unnecessary quotes", and raise you some greengrocer apostrophe's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe#Greengrocers.27_apostrophes).
(except for "Margo's", of course.)

And now, your feelgood moment of the day: Navy veteran accidentally gets himself invited to veteran's day breakfast with President Obama.

Unfortunately, the story has to repeatedly mention the White House gate-crashers from a couple of weeks ago, mostly to keep their names relevant. I hate that.

This guy and his fellows are great -

For example, the Nostalgia Critic - http://www.thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic

Where he reviews old movies. Add to that, other characters played by him and others.

Weird Al is a guest host in the Autotune episode. I also enjoyed the Boom Goes the Dynamite episode. But ONN was the first I saw.

Figure this is as good a place as any.

I'm launching a web site soon, and we just got the forums up.  It's mostly a skeleton frame right now, but more to come.

http://beefbeerandpoker.com/forum/index.php

Come sign up, we'll be covering stuff you sit around and talk to your friends about.  Primarily poker focused, we will have other content as well.

If you sign up today, you qualify for a free poker tournament we're having in February (If you are 18 years of age.)

I'll be hyping Union Dues a little over there as we get rolling.

He talks in his sleep.
She records it with a voice-activated recorder.
She transcribes it and posts it in a blog.
Hilarity ensues.
