I'm starting this thread as kind of a catch all. The idea is if you need recommendations on a piece of shareware or a little tech help, you can post a question here.
I would like to try to avoid the apple v. microcrap fights, but I'm a realist.
-
Of course I started this thread, because I have a question.
I need an RSS aggregator. Apple has a bunch of this stuff in the next operating system. The problem is that if I upgrade one more time, my computer will just stop. So I need something for a G4 running OSX 10.3.9. Any recommendations?
-
Quite possibly not what you want, but I simply use Google Reader as my RSS aggregator. I think this is exactly the kind of service that works just as well online only, and I don't have to be on my own computer to check on my feeds.
-
Same here. Google Reader is pretty useful, and comes as part of the whole iGoogle / gmail package. I've found iGoogle especially useful for keeping all my bookmarks accessible wherever I log in from, keeping my calendar info to hand wherever I am, and the wonderful mail/reader combo.
-
I really only use a computer at home. I have it turn on and log in before I even get up. It then starts the programs I want and downloads my podcasts before I even get to it. Since most of my RSS stuff would be images, I wanted something that could also start up automatically and download the stuff while I'm still in the shower.
I will look at the google stuff though.
-
60% of the web department at my TV station uses Google Reader. It downloads pretty quickly, so if you start your browser and log into it, it will start d/ling your images.
I use Opera, and frequently I'll see "downloading 1765 of 1908 images" or somesuch -- many of them icons or ads, but a goodly chunk from Flickr or Cheezburger too.
-
I'm procrastinating on the whole goolge thing because I don't like that it's not on my computer. It's a personal hang-up. It's not a logical complaint. All I know is that if it was MSN, I would shoot the person who suggested it.
-

Why? Simple Microsoft hatred? Or is it a trust thing? Because - and I say this as the person who made the suggestion - Google has a far worse track record for privacy in recent years.
-
What's a good podcast catcher for Vista? I used juice on XP, but since I got a new laptop I've just been downloading manually. (Something besides DRM-crippled ITunes please)

1) I've never used anything by MS that actually worked without having to spend forever getting it set up. Whenever anything from MS gets near my machine I have to de-install the damn thing.
2) MS was far beyond the pointof ever being considered before I had even heard of google. Also note I didn't say I really trust google either.

such deep, profound hatred! (its called uninstall by the way :))
the google thing doesnt sound so bad, not much in the way of your privacy could be jeopardized by it...

I think the concern is that your search habits, email, programming projects, chat and a heap more can be correlated. We know that Google already look at your mail in order to target advertising. The question is whether or not that information is used for more nefarious purposes. Their track record seems to be good, but there's no guarantee it always will be.
Granted, there's no such thing as perfect security, but why make it easy?

I downloaded Juice for Vista and it seems to work okay. It was a bit jittery to start with, but I think that was more to do with my unfamiliarity with the product than Juice being problematic.

You really, really need to supply more information before anyone could hazzard a guess as to what the problem is. For example, what is the make and model of your laptop? Was the HD built in, or an add-on? What cases have you ordered? It might be a good idea to take a picture of the HD and the pin configuration and post it, as well.
At the moment, all I can say is "yes, something is probably wrong".

Have you tried putting it in the freezer first? Believe it or not, putting my old ASUS external HD into the freezer for 45 minutes, then testing it, then another 45 minutes actually got it working well enough for me to retrieve my data before smashing the drive with a hammer and throwing it away.

I think (though I'm not sure, due to the vaguness of the original post) that the problem isn't that the HD isn't working, it's that he can't find a casing that it physically fits in.

Oh.
They make docks now for HDs, and IDE to USB cables, I believe. I've definitely seen the docks.

OSX question
I have photoshop for OS9 which I then upgraded to CS for OSX. Now I'm getting a new Mac without OS9. Has anyone been in the same situation and what did you do? I, of course, want PS on the new machine, but having just shelled out a small fortune for it I don't want to buy a new version of PS.

Try this (http://vienna-rss.sourceforge.net/vienna21.php). I too am stuck with 10.3.9 and this will run on it. Has a number of neat features, including "letterbox" mode for those who like to use their widescreen monitors. Overall, I prefer it to Newsgator, and the Google/Safari/Opera RSS readers. I use Vienna daily and have no complaints about it at all.

You should be okay. CS until CS4 was Carboned, so it should run on OSX okay. It will boot slow (the programs that is, not the machine) since it has to emulate the old OS 9 environment.
'Course, don't take anything I say as written in stone. I did not buy the original CS, but rather CS3 and it runs tickety boo on my Intel iMac. I will ask around the graphic design department here and see what they have to say.

The CS is OSX, but it only installed, because there was already a version on the machine. The complete program is on the disks. Now that I won't have OS9 on my machine, I can't install the old version so that I can update it. Or are you saying I need to load OS9 so that I can load the old PS then upgrade and then throw out the OS9?
-
Sorry it took so long to get back to you Russell. No, you should not have to re-instal OS9. Since CS is already on your system, it "should" boot up and run it's own updates for any changes that occurred when you upgraded your OS. The one big complaint about OSX was that it (on purpose) was not backwards compatible to previous OSs, so programs that ran natively in OS9 will either a: not run at all or b: run much slower because OSX will first need to (either) boot a small version of OS9 (called Classic) or run a hidden emulator (which you will only notice because it takes a while for the program to boot). Confusing, I know.
The short version is, CS "should" run. If it doesn't, there isn't much you can do about it, unfortunately. The backwards compatiblity thing hurt a lot of people in the pocketbook for having to shell out for new software. You may have to purchase a new version of CS (if you know a student or an educator, you can get an educational version of CS4 Masterclass without the docs for around $500.00 through their university bookstore if that bookstore sells mac software).
I hope this helps.
-
I had no problems on the other machine when I upgraded the OS. My question here is that since I don't have classic on this new machine and only have an OSX version as an upgrade, how do I install it?
I'm just going to jump into it tonight or tomorrow. I copied over the program from my old machine already, but it doesn't work because the supporting files aren't there. It says I need to reinstall. I'm hoping that it will take that as a previous version already installed and let me upgrade.
Buying a new copy is not an option right now.

I lost all my bookmarks... any ideas on how to get them back w/o re adding every one?
thanks

Do you back up your files regularly? If you do, there might be a copy in there.

what OS are you running and what browser?
-
vista and the latest version of firefox
-
okay, try this... if you want the fastest way and dont wanna see the process, just skip to right after the last step to see the shortcut lol
1. go to windows explorer (computer)
2. C drive
3. press alt to open the file/edit/view/etc bar.
4. go into tools, folder options
5. go to the view tab
6. in the hidden files and folders section, make sure you can see hidden files
7. press ok, exit out, etc.
8. C:\Users
9. Find your username, in my case it is Brian, so i go to C:\Users\Brian
10. There is a folder that was hidden called AppData, go there
11. Now go to the Roaming folder
12. In there find the Mozilla folder
now its C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla
13. Firefox folder
14. Profiles folder
15. pak8s4ok.default folder
now its C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\pak8s4ok.default
16. should be a Bookmarkbackups folder, and there should be a few files there, all are backups of your bookmarks. :) id think the last one in the list is the most recent. They are JSON files
so in the end you are in
C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\pak8s4ok.default\bookmarkbackups
if you want you can just replace 'brian' there with your username that appears in the C:\Users folder, and you'll go right to it :)
hope that works!
-
I got it thanks for the info
had to open and copy them but that is much better than losing them all lol
thanks again for the info

Couldn't you just import the file? (I'm asking a serious question here--this is something I'll probably need to know one day!)

probably

The newer versions of OSX have Classic running "invisibly". The machine no longer boots a Classic mode window or icon. I am going to mail this thread to my buddy the Apple tech and see what he has to say. I still think that you should be okay though. Let me know how it works out.
-
probably
agreed but I dont know how lol

bookmarks>organize bookmarks>import is a button at the top
(btw, I am very very good with Windows software questions :)... duno mac tho sorry Russell)

**edit**
it works now idk what was up but...

podiobooks + firefox
is anyone else having problems or is that just me?
it works fine in IE but firefox is having issues
**edit**
IE gave me some issues getting to my subscriptions but now it works
I use Opera of late. It works fine for most things, but my wife was unable to access Photobucket using it from my computer.
I don't use Photobucket so it's not an issue for me.

Is this still true with Leopard on Intel Macs?
My G4 Quicksilver tower (ca. 2001) had its L2 cache fail (with very bizarre and unpleasant effects), so now I'm looking at buying a higher end Mini (http://www.apple.com/macmini/). And a Firewire enclosure for the 2nd hard drive in case I have to boot from the backup.
[later]
It doesn't seem likely.

Yep, the Intel macs have completely broken from all that has come before. While they will run software not specifically written for Intel macs, they boot yet another "emulator" and for large programs like anything Adobe, that can take an annoying amount of time. This means some older stuff is not going to run (basically anything that requires a specific Classic Mode boot OS 9, although I have had success with some programs like Diablo II). Apple has just about finished with the backwards compatiblilty to older machines. This does suck for people who cannot afford to re-invest in hardeware and software, it is good for the end user. A lot of the problems Windoze experiences is because everything has to be backwards compatible to like 1989 (exageration I know, but it is outrageous).
You will definitely appreciate the new machine. My G4 Quicksilver tower (the Dual Core beastie) crashed hard and horribly and I lost absolutely everything (somehow the hard drives got fried in the crash too, along with the power converter, the RAM, yeah pretty much everything). I call it The Infocalypse (props to Stephenson). So I took that as a sign to buy one of the shiny new Intel Macs. I love it, and I even partitioned and polluted my drive with XP. Dual OS boots FTW. Even the Mac Minis are a serious machine now.
-
yaaah, if i end up in computer animation im most likely going to get a dual boot comp. I love windows but for animation its all mac from what i hear
-

I've used my wife's Mini, and it is a world of difference. The G4 Quicksilver was a hand-me-down from her. I had borrowed hers occasionally to do some recording for Librivox.org, because it is so quiet-running. You have to put your ear right on it to hear anything.
I'm waiting to accumulate a bit more disposable income before I place the order for a Mini. In the meantime I've resurrected my old G3 "Blue & White" tower, just so I could get podcast updates, change the playlists on my iPod, and so on.

Well, not all people use Macs for CGI, but there is a strong majority that do. Macs are (if you ask me) the best machine for computer animation, video and audio recording and editing, and pretty much anything to do with graphic design and desktop publishing. You can do these things on a PC running Windows, but why would you want to? If all you do is play games and calculate spreadsheets, PC's are the way to go (that is why I dual boot, for the games), this is why PC continue to dominate the computer market.

Wow, I had one of those too, they looked so cool and futuristic (until the iFruit iMacs came out anyway, those this looked awful), and at the time, kicked some serious butt processing wise. Probably my favourite Mac in design (although I do like my white plastic iMac, the aluminum doesn't do it for me) I now covet the PowerMac towers. Independant fans for each bay! 2 Optical drives! 5 hard drives!, 8 processors! All the cable ports on the front! And the design is very very sharp. Looks like "the computer of the future"; industrial, sleek, cool.

Heh.. solved it myself.
Turns out I'm an idiot. There was a small adapter stuck on to the HD that turns the pins in to slots. Pull that off and it's good to go just like every other HD.

Done and done.
Actually, I ordered three different ones before figuring it out, so Shwankie and I each have one for our dead computers, and I sent one on to my brother in MI.
-
its the best thing to do. I got an external converter when i got my new laptop, so my old hard drive is easily accessible, and all my old files too. Made reinstalling everything MUUUUCH easier. Its pretty funny tho, i went into it to get onto my old Documents folder, and it said that i did not have security clearance because i was not the owner of the drive and the folder. then it asked me if i wanted to become the owner of the folder... naturally yes i wanted to. so it told me i had to go to the properties of the folder in the security tab and make myself the owner... which i figured out how to do quite easily... no password questions asked, nothing. It seemed pretty stupid for it to make me go through this whole system before letting me into the folder, when it doesnt even try to stop me once im doing it... anyways i had to do it for every single folder that i wanted to get into (but not folders within those folders, you just click a little box saying own all subfolders)...
i just thought its pretty funny
"no you cant get in... do you want to?"
"sure!"
"well then just do this this and this and you are in!"
"okay!"
"welcome!"

Because recording and editing .WAV files using Nero Wave Edit on my PC is cheaper and easier than buying a second computer. I don't do animation or video or desktop publishing, so it doesn't make sense to buy a Mac in addition to my PC.

A guy with the cleaning contract at my workplace has successfully booted OS X on a vanilla PC he had sitting around, using some hacked installer DVD that had extra patches or something. His purpose was just to try it out for a while, and he intends to get a "real" Mac if he likes it.
Have a look around: http://www.google.com/search?q=hackintosh
I'm not sure if these are dual-boot systems, or merely Windows machines that were wiped and had Mac OS installed exclusively.
I imagine you would not get any upgrades from Apple, which occur at least once a month for one application or another, so you would be sorta "frozen in time" unless you got a newer Hackintosh installer. I have no idea really. "I am but an egg."

Can anyone walk me through writing a WGET that GETs an RSS file from pipes.yahoo.com and PUTs that file on our webserver? I downloaded WGET but it's WAY beyond me.
If you can help me write it as a webserver script in VB.Net or Javascript that would be fine too. PERL, PHP, Rails, and Java don't work on our server.
Thank you.

You can, in fact, build a PC that will dual boot OS X and your favourite flavour of Windows, but it is not very easy and in the end violates Apple's EULA on OS X (which states that you cannot run OS X on non-Apple hardware). Last month's MacUser ran an article on just this topic. As it turned out the build the author did was just a little slower than a comparable Mac, but concluded it just wasn't worth the time or effort or even money to do so.

Because recording and editing .WAV files using Nero Wave Edit on my PC is cheaper and easier than buying a second computer. I don't do animation or video or desktop publishing, so it doesn't make sense to buy a Mac in addition to my PC.
Just saying ... you did ask.
Well, if you bought a Mac you wouldn't need a PC, now would you?
;)
I'd need it to run my games.
Hence the dual boot. ;) Although with the popularity of the Mac as a home computer platform, I would expect that more and more games will be either ported to the Mac or written specifically to take advantage of Open GL. Now if only I could get a Mac port of BioShock, life would be good (oh, and the long long delayed port of COD:4).
-
When you want to play a game, you just boot the Mac in Windows.
And take a performance hit, as I understand the situation.

Not that I have ever seen. So long as your hardware is up to running what ever game you have, it should be fine. When you boot to Windows, you are booting to Windows, not running an emulator or simulated Windows OS. You are actually running Windows just like you would on a PC. If your hardware is not up to snuff, well that is a different story. I have had no problems whatsoever running high end games like BioShock, Call of Duty 4, etc. Granted, I don't have a super awesome self built gaming rig, but my year old iMac does just fine with anything I can through at it on the Windows side. In fact, if the preformance tests I ran on it last year are to be believed, my Mac actually runs XP faster than a comparable PC.
-
pcs are cheaper for better!
you want to game? get a PC. dual booting on a mac aint the same, you dont have the raw power you can get with a good PC
just did a lil comparison. For me to get something remotely like my laptop now, id have to pay $3000, and it doesnt include half the shit i have on my laptop, nor could i get it on there. my laptop was $1700. I wonder which one I should get. (again, unless I am definitely animating hardcore, and id rather find a way to boot osx from a pc)

Yeah, I'm hardly in the market to even upgrade the computer I have now (for a reference point, it has an AGP video card; I couldn't use a PCI-E video card even if I had one) much less buy a new one. And the most multimedia I get into is some rudimentary audio editing, and DVD encoding and mastering.

NEW QUESTION:
I have a 5th Gen. iPod. I want to be able to use it to record sounds when I'm out and about. Does anybody know how I can do that without modifying the iPod. I know I can do it if I run it on Linux, but I like the OS it uses.
Any help or do I need to get an iRiver?

you can use the ipod to record stuff? since when?
and if you wanna do that just buy a recorder, cant be too expensive. (yes carrying one thing is easier than 2 buuut theres a limit)

If buying something like this (http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Griffin-iTalk-Pro-Stereo-Mic-Recorder-for-iPod/3014065/product.html?cid=123620&fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=11160192) doesn't count as "modifying the iPod" then you can do it, otherwise, no.
And running iPodLinux (I assume that's what you mean by "if I run it on Linux") or RockBox on it isn't going to magically make it sprout a microphone, so you'll still need to buy the hardware.

I'm willing to bet that it merely uses the iPod as add-on storage, assuming that you've "enabled disk use" on the iPod. If so, then you would not be able to listen to the recording (with just the iPod alone) until you've added it to your iTunes Library and synced it back onto the iPod as part of a playlist.
Still, if you've got a lot of storage on the iPod to play with, it's probably not a bad idea.

So I'm going to ask you guys.
I have no idea what happened. It froze, crashed and since then I get no background graphics. Buttons, boxes etc are there but I can't see them. Images (like in a google image search) appear, but none of the page graphics. It's very zen and all, but mightily hard to work with. I've removed all addons, reinstalled the latest version etc etc but I still just get plain text.
I'm sure it's something simple but buggered if I know what. Help?!!
btw: I've asked on the firefox forums but no one has answered me there. I'm hoping for a bit more love from this group ;)

While not a current Firefox user (a very important website decided that it didn't like it, so I went back to IE) I'd suggest looking in the option settings in two areas -- one having to do with performance, and perhaps another having to do with images. In the performance area, either look for something related to images, or possibly something misleadingly generic like "low bandwidth setting" or some such. In the images area, look for something obvious like, "Display background images."
Another option is to hit a "Reset to defaults" button and see if that solves the problem. Many programs will hang on to registry settings or configuration files even if the program is removed. This is sometimes desireable, but I think it originated as a practical joke played on support desks by development teams. (Most error messages are created with the same end in mind.)
I realize this is vague, but I see you haven't gotten an answer in the six hours plus you've had the question posted; I hope this helps.
-
try uninstalling it, then go to program files and make sure the firefox folder is gone (if not, delete it), then restart your computer, then redownload it and reinstall.

Thanks Bdoomed! That was it. I hadn't manually deleted the folder previously. Ahhh, internet that's what you really look like!

O great and mighty N_sh,
I can no longer upload pictures, I've tried multiple formats (jpg, gif etc) multiple sizes! Whatever am I doing wrong? Should I go find my photobucket account (If I remember where I put it) and use that? And if so... how- I seem to have forgotten. Please help?
-
Heradel was always our expert on directly uploaded images into a post, so I'll let him handle that part. Linking from an outside account is simply using the IMG coding and is still working for me. (test image:(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2416/2079758635_005767ae36_o.jpg)) I just checked and I'm not having any problem putting up an avatar. If Heradel says the direct uploading is working fine, you're going to need to give us info about your computer and OS and stuff. Windows problems are quickly handled by Bdoomed. Mac problems haven't happened yet, so we don't know what to do about that, but we can make some guesses.
-
you need to use an outside image hosting site and use [img] tags with the hyperlink to that image, so yes find your photobucket account
or am i misinterpreting your problem?

I'm having the same problem. It was when I tried to upload a modified version of the Hello Kitty pic I currently have as an avatar. Uploading a local file appears to be broken; I had to link to the online copy that Nash put up in his avatar poll thread.
-
It looks like there's an issue with the permissions for the upload directory, I'll let Steve know.

Ding! We have a winner. That's exactly what I wanted, just something that I can plug into the bottom.
I ended up getting this (http://www.micromemo.co.uk/MicroMemoWhite.htm).
Cool point:
It integrates with the iPod. When you attach it, it shows up as voice memo in the extras menu. Whe you connect it to iTunes it syncs and downloads the recordings into a playlist in iTunes.
Negative:
There's a nasty hiss. The hiss goes away if I switch it to line in, but I haven't hooked up a line yet. If the problem is just the microphone, then it's perfect for my needs. If the hiss never goes away, I'll have some use for it, but not a whole lot.

Checked the line in. It sounds very clear. I'll check it with other microphones later.

Thanks much for the input: Nash, StePH, BD and anyone else :) I'll go figure out my photobucket account.

I'm getting into Photoshop more and more. I've gotten to the point where the mouse is a limiting factor and I'd like to move up to a graphic tablet (for the life of me I can't remember the slang for these things). Who uses one of these things in there work and what tips can you give me for picking one? What features are important and which ones are stupid? Which brands and models are worth the cash? I'm willing to pay a bit for quality, but I don't want to pay through the nose.
-
Same here, I love photoshop and have been contemplating getting a tablet for some time, and am thinking of a small or medium Wacom Bamboo (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000R3Q360/400001373-21/?m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE). Is this any good?
But my main problem is photoshop, I have recently become the proud owner of a macbook and only have photoshop on my PC, which I am not using anymore.
I have the Gimp on my Mac but cannot get my head around it, being used to photoshop, which is so much more intuitive.
Obviously, there is no way I can ever afford the real deal and I was wondering whether anyone could give me some advice on Photoshop Elements for Mac and whether it is worth buying. I am not a student anymore (actually work in academia) and cannot get the student version of the full photoshop, unless anyone has an idea of how to get around that.
-
Cuddlebug: Try GimpShop, might make it a bit easier: http://www.gimpshop.com/download.shtml
And usually if you're an employee of a school you meet the requirements for the educational discount, but I'm not how Adobe defines it.
The Wacom's are good tablets (I can't actually think of another manufacturer of tablets that's gotten good press), get the one that fits your budget. Most of my Photoshopping hasn't required a lot of pixel manipulation, but when I have used them they've been useful.
I think the only real difference other than size is the pressure sensitivity (expressed in number of levels), but it has been a long time since I looked into getting one.
-
I have a wacom tablet - love it. I got it as a present 10 years ago (it cost about $120), and still use it. It is a beige one, and not nearly as cool looking as the ones now.
I recommend them highly. I even use it in place of a mouse. Doesn't take long to get used to them.

Have no idea what you're talking about there, must be my terrible internet connection at home, very, and I mean VERY slow and unstable. (takes forever to download the podcasts for example). Works better on the office mac, but in the office I have a very strict colleague who is responsible for IT stuff and is watching very closely over my shoulder, literally OVER MY SHOULDER, right eytanz? So downloading private stuff on the computer in the office, well, CERTAIN private stuff that could get HIM into trouble, is not an option. :-\
-
IT guy issues aside, my recommendation is to keep working at using GIMP.
I went through a similar issue with 3D Studio Max. I had been lucky enough to get a slightly older version for cheap and really really enjoyed using it. Unfortunately as time went on, my version got older and older. I missed out on the newer, cooler plugins - it wasn't even a matter of my doing the same stuff with a bit more work - things like hair were just impossible. Then I stumbled upon Blender (www.blender.org) - a freeware, open source modeller and renderer. The interface was/is completely, totally different. Different menus, different names for objects, even different layouts. It took some time, but now I'm proficient, and alot of the nifty features on the big price software are available on Blender. From what I know about GIMP, it's pretty much the same idea.
If I was a professional, I'd probably go with the brand name stuff (support, new features faster sometimes), but as an amateur I am really appreciative of the freeware stuff.
-
i tried blender a while back, i think after your recommendation...
couldnt get it down, didnt try that hard tho.

New Question:
I don't know too much about how mail servers work. At home I'm set up with pop (incoming) and SMTP(outgoing) mail servers. Shouldn't these be able to work from any internet connection?
I'm at my parent's and I just set them up with DSL. I can get all of my RSS feeds (both through Safari and Mail), get all my podcasts, and browsing is no problem, but I cannot get or send email. I'm forced to go to my provider's website to get into my mailbox. Is this normal or do I need to track down a problem?

Odds are they've locked access to the POP/SMTP server from outside their own network, which is just a weird thing to do. I'd check their FAQ page to see if they talk about it there.
-
Not an expert, but my answer is yes - provided you have access to the mail server and the correct account information.
When you configure your email client (Outlook, Pegasus, Eudora, Opera, whatever) it needs to be configured to talk with the mail server. The standard setup is pop.domain.com and smtp.domain.com, but your service provider should have instructions on how to do this.
-
It works just fine at home. It's setup according to what Slic said. I'll take Heradel's advice and see what that gets me.
-
They'll probably have an entry about "accessing your mail overseas or on vacation". It's still bloody stupid to limit it to your own network domain, but maybe there's some German privacy law in place.
-
Here's a stupid question from a moron. I listen to Pseudo and Escape pods on my iPod touch. It used to stop at the end of each podcast. That's what I want. Then it started immediately playing the next podcast. That's now what I want. I thought I had it fixed but then it started again today. Not only that, but the story it started, even though I stopped it right away, disappeared when I plugged in the iPod to charge. iTunes must have thought I had listened to the whole thing.
Please be gentle when you tell me how simple this is to fix.
-
well i have figured out on my ipod classic that if i am listening to podcasts, and shuffle is on, it does not go to the next one automatically. however when shuffle is turned off, it will automatically go to the next podcast in the list.
so try that!
and something about your settings say that podcasts are deleted once listened to? id just get rid of that option and manually delete stuff. im guessing itunes is deleting it as soon as it is not "marked as unplayed", which you can mark it as by right clicking the episode.
i can clarify if needed :P
-
Try restoring the iPod in question.
-
How do you turn shuffle on and off?
Deleting podcasts that have been listened to is an automatic function that it has always done. I don't know if there is a way to change that.
-
Robin,
When you plug in your iPod you need to click on the iPod in iTunes. It's over on the left below the libraries and above the playlists. You will get your primary iPod window with a series of tabs. The tabs give you access to all the different areas you can setup.
The shuffle control is on the iPod itself and should be (is on the classic) in the setup menu.
On the info page for individual files there is a check box labeled "skip when shuffling" (or something like that). When this is checked, the iPod won't play this file when shuffling. This is checked by default on podcasts. If all o your files in your playlist have this checked, the iPod will stop playing after each file. The same as if the playlist only had one file.
I hope something in there was helpful.
-
anyone have any experience on them especially them suddenly not being accessible. it shows in My Computer, but it is not accessible at all. This is seriously bad news. I have my itunes library on it. I have my television shows on it, it's where uTorrent defaults to download. can you tell i am in panic mode? if anyone has any ideas or suggestions i am open to them. it also seems as if it is accessing the drive constantly (via flashing of the light that is supposed to signify disc usage). I am running windows vista home premium 32bit.
thanks in advance.

Lowky, this is an external hard drive? Is it making unusual sounds? I assume there isn't a backup? You've restarted both? Can you see the drive in my computer or not? Does another computer recognize the drive?

yes external hard drive, no unusual sounds no back up (i know bad me) have restarted both. it is visible in my computer but it is unaccessable. don't have another computer available right now to check the drive. I went into computer management and looked at the drive it said it was RAW! It had been NTFS. I ran chkdsk on it and it was repairing/finding errors including a corrupt file table. From the Seagate forums I knew this would take a while. Poster there said 3+ hours. about 14 hours it was only 9 percent finished and on waking this morning it made it to 10 percent and then some error caused it to stop. The data is a lost cause i am guessing which really sucks but I don't know if reformatting would work or if I should consider this drive part of the great e-waste problem.

My wife installed Skype 4.0 on her work computer (windows xp 2002). It automatically changes every phone number in he emails into a Skpye hyperlink. The problem is she has a computer based phone system at work. She can't use it if Skype is hyperlinking every phone number. Does anyone know how to turn this off?
Edit:
I found an answer for this one:
To disable Skype number recognition in IE7:
1. Open browser, go to tools, internet options
2. Select Programs tab at top
3. Click Manage add-ons button at bottom
4. Wait for window to open and populate add-ons
5. KILL!!!! "Skype add-on" (mastermind) [select both and disable]
You can pretty much do that in every program Skype has infested.
-
Thanks, Nash. I have the same issues.
-
Glad I could help.
Consider that an answered prayer. Now send me the hundred bucks.

OK, question here aimed right at Heradel. I got Gimpshop for OSX. Everytime I start it up, it shows a progress bar that says Caching fonts and then after 30-45 seconds it crashes. I've never gotten any further than that. Right now I'm running OSX 10.5.7. Yesterday was the fourth automatic system upgrade since I downloaded Gimpshop. It hasn't worked on any of these versions.
-
I hope somebody can help me ...
I made the mistake of getting an iPod a couple of years ago, and I've been suffering iTunes ever since.
Now just about the only thing I like about iTunes is Smart Playlists, but the program in general can't suck enough.
I know there are a few alternative programs that will load files onto an iPod, but none seem to support smart playlists -- except Songbird which appears to be in a condition somewhere between "alpha" and "beta" software, and I can't get it to work at all.
Anybody know of something that isn't iTunes but will support smart playlists and get the sounds onto my iPod?
(fucking Apple ... why must they suck so?)
-
You know what goddamn sucks? I had to reinstall my OS, and when I reinstalled Apple's shitware (AKA iTunes) the play counts on my podcasts got reset to zero, so my smart playlists are all fucked. >:(
-
lolz. i like iTunes (ducks under flying chairs).
especially after dealing with zune software. talk about suck.
but sorry duno any programs that load onto ipods.
for podcasts? i just use the podcast thing and listen to the ones marked "new".... i duno what else you need... unless the podcasts are not being registered as podcasts and are registered as normal audio... then that sucks...

The iPod does something funny with podcasts ... it orders them newest-to-oldest, so if I want to listen to a bunch in sequence I have to go to the end of the list and play the last one, then repeat for the next.
There are a few programs that purport to transfer files to iPods, such as Rockbox, Sharepod, Poddox, and Songbird ... but apart from Songbird (which still doesn't work for me) none that I've found support Smart Playlists.

If you use a smartplaylist to organize your podcasts, the podcasts will be put in the list as they are released. You can also have any playlist order itself by release date.
Or when you're playing the podcasts on the iPod, you can use the On-The-Go function to make a playlist in whatever order you want.

I know ... but as I said, only iTunes seems to have this feature in any useable form. And I despise iTunes to such a degree that I lack the words to fully express myself.

Okay, looked closer at the wiki. Still no use to me; my iPod's a 4GB Nano, 2nd-gen, and according to this chart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPodLinux#Compatibility) iPodLinux doesn't work at all on it -- and very well may never work on it:
f. ^ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPodLinux#ref_6) For 2G iPod's and newer it is currently impossible to execute custom code due to encrypted firmware. [6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPodLinux#cite_note-n2g-5)

Have you looked at MediaMonkey (http://www.mediamonkey.com)? it has another name but will also do smart playlists. you may need to upgrade to gold version for full functionality of them though. I am just looking at it myself so don't know much but Itunes is pissing me off more and more lately as well so....

I haven't tried Floola (http://www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/), but it's supposed to support smart playlists YMMV

Well the 24 hours with out google i spent here in China, sucked bad.
I am looking into duplicating/migrating some of my life from Google to alternatives.
I figure Google docs is pretty easy to migrate from so not as concerned.
I looked at some alternatives, some I used before Google Reader sucked me in, but I just can't seem to find another RSS reader that seems as good as Greader. I like that most of the text of an article is there, especially for the tech threads and DIY threads I read, most of the others I saw don't give you the option to read inline, but send you to the website. I can skim quickly with Greader and determine if I want to get more info, instead of having to go to a website, frequently wait for all their other crap to load as well as what I *MIGHT* be interested in. So I ask you what are some good alternatives to GReader.

It looks like there's an issue with the permissions for the upload directory, I'll let Steve know.
This issue is still unresolved last I checked.

Have you looked at MediaMonkey (http://www.mediamonkey.com)? it has another name but will also do smart playlists. you may need to upgrade to gold version for full functionality of them though. I am just looking at it myself so don't know much but Itunes is pissing me off more and more lately as well so....
Been using MediaMonkey for the past few weeks. It seems to work pretty good, except that smart playlists are a feature of the paid version and not available for free. But I've at least got about the same functionality I had with iTunes before I discovered smart playlists.
I also like that it puts all podcasts in the podcast library, whether they were received via a feed or downloaded manually. I hated iTunes' putting the manually downloaded files in the regular library separate from the podcast lists.

I don't get that with iTunes. I can change a file from music to audiobook, but I can't change to or from podcasts.

Other MediaMonkey gripes:
It doesn't let the Show Description transfer to the iPod. A minor quibble I know, but I was hoping for something that does everything iTunes does without sucking. :(
On the plus side, it allows you the option of keeping files on the iPod that are no longer on the computer you're syncing at.

You can do that with iTunes also. That's how I have my wife's set up.

Yeah, you just turn off the automatic update. You have to drag and drop files. I do about 20 files a week on my wife's iPod, so it's not a big deal. Once I put something on her iPod I can delete it from my computer. It stays on her iPod until I pull it off. I put some of that stuff on there over two years ago, and it's still there.
-
I can still auto-sync with MediaMonkey. It pops up a checklist of things that are no longer on the computer or on the playlists, and I can elect to keep or delete them.
I might consider actually paying for this. Don't know if I'd want to go $20 for all updates to version 3, or $40 for a lifetime license.

Anyone know how to get Excel that was installed in another language to have English menus?
I have Japanese Windows and Japanese MS Office installed on my computer. Those are the versions my company's got. J-Windows is fine, but I would prefer to work in English Excel. MS Office comes with a thing called "Microsoft Office Tools" that has a "Language Settings" section (I'm translating these names, the names on an English system may be different) that looks like I can use to change the language, but when I click on English nothing happens.
The thing is that I have gotten this to work before. I remember I used the Language Settings, but don't remember exactly what I did. Recently I reinstalled everything in my machine, and can't get Excel switched to English. Any ideas?

Install Open Office?
Wish I knew, I don't think it's even an option with our Chinese version at my Job. I installed OpenOffice (at least until IT decides to purge it.)

okay so i poked around at Office on my computer...
I dont think i can change my display language on my computer because my Language Settings office tool does not have a tab for "display settings" rather only for "editing settings" and the "about" tab. when looking at the help page for how to change this stuff, a screenshot showed a third tab for "display settings" which i don't have... i don't know how to get this, i think you have to buy a language pack.... yeah you do...
If the Display Language tab is not displayed, you have only one Language Pack installed. For information about how to install another Language Pack, see Obtain and install a Language Pack.
so maybe when you reinstalled Office, it left out the English Language Pack that you had before...

Taiwan, where no web sites are creepily blocked.

Ok, is there an easy way to transfer Firefox settings from a Vista machine to an XP machine?
I'm in the middle of switching lap tops and it's amazing how much I had tweaked the settings on my old one.

kay um i have no idea WHICH filename it is, but if you go into program files, mozilla firefox there will be lotsa dll files and txt files and whatnot, i would guess if you copy all of em and paste em into the firefox folder on your vista laptop, that ONE of those files will have your settings in it. either way it shouldn't hurt your installation of firefox on vista if ya do it. just copy and paste/replace duplicate files with the files you are pasting
the file might be the browserconfig.properties file... seems obvious but who knows.
anyway yeah try that and let me know how it goes, i'm curious.
worse comes to worse you have to uninstall/reinstall firefox on the vista comp :P
EDIT: oop i misread, thought u were goin from xp to vista, not the other way around... (why? just get windows 7) anyway its still the same i'd guess just the other way around, substitute all "vista" with "xp" and all "xp" with "vista" :)

Will give it a shot, thanks.
Going to XP because it's an older machine that's just been sitting around. Children and laptop power cords don't mix...
