First of all - hi everyone. This is post #1. :)  I've been listening to EP since late last year, right after I got my iPod Classic and found EP in the podcast directory. Previously, I'd been listening to audio books on XM's Sonic Theater, but it's 90% re-runs, and doesn't even play the full catalog of the series' it plays. You'd think XM would invest a little more in the world's only satellite audio drama/audio book channel.  :)

So anyway, about Infected: I've been hearing the promos on EP, and last night I saw an ad for the Sci-Fi channel's new movie Infected. Does anybody know if the Sci-Fi channel movie is any relation to Sigler's novel? The plot synopsis of the movie looks pretty different, but still the same basic premise: alien life form (or something) is infecting people, making them do Very Bad Things.

So is Sci-Fi's Infected based on Scott Sigler's Infected, or is it just a blatent ripoff?

I'm sure it's only a coincidence.

Yeah, if you boil it down to "alien life form (or something) is infecting people, making them do Very Bad Things", then you could probably argue, with just as much justification that Infected is a rip-off of The Exorcist or Fallen.

And "Infected" is a pretty obvious title for work about an evil that spreads like a disease. I'm sure there's no connection.

Sigler actually sold the rights to Infected to Rogue Pictures, I believe.  I think the movie is supposed to go into production early 2009.  So the Sci-Fi Channel thing is probably just a coincidence.

Possible, but to read Sigler's forums one would think they might have ripped him off. Or at least his rabid fan base thinks so.
Reading the synopsis though it hardly sounds like the same story:
Ben Mosher is an unlikely hero with a dead-end job and a broken heart. Lisa is an ambitious reporter and Ben's estranged lover. But when Ben and Lisa find themselves in the middle of an alien conspiracy where humans are being poisoned and impregnated with Alien larvae, the pair must put their past behind them and work together to save mankind. Karla is the editor of the newspaper where Lisa and Ben work and Malcolm is a friendly alien who helps Ben and Lisa. Muse Entertainment

How do you fight a bully that can un-make history?

As if Ancestor wasn't an obvious ripoff of Jurasic Park  ::)

I think you could also make the case that Infected owes a lot to Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the Puppet Masters.

Wow, the outpouring of bile and vitriol and spleen-venting that I've set off by posting the above to that forum is something to behold.

Someone is going to verify you to death!

I tell you, if I was Mr Sigler, I'd be embarrassed by the people posting to that thread.

  • A fine idea, but who bells cat?
What an ugly forum.

I'm not sure what that means, but if it's supposed to be scary or intimidating, it falls well short of the mark.

That's only because you haven't had any experience being verified.  Painful.  Think Vogan poetry only without the high mortality rate.  So they can verify you again and again.

Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment but I just responded to them again.  But I don't think I'll be back on that board any time soon.  I don't like the formatting ... I can't figure out how to italicise or bold my text.

[edit]
Weird ... my comment is there but it's made to look like Synapticjam posted it, and it has the header "looks like someone deleted their comment."

Oh well ... f*ck those pillowbiting assclowns.  I'm done there.  My sympathies to Mr. Sigler for having such "admirers".

I am certain the only possible relation to Scott's book is ripping off his idea --- but it isn't an original idea.  What is original idea about Scott's book is its O MY GOD AM I REALLY READING THIS BEFORE BED interpretation.  HOWEVER, I had the incredible opportunity to go to his book signing in LA and then hang out with him at a bar... and he was talking movie... so hold on to your seats... maybe we will see something better than 28 days!
