Oldtimers might remember a film poll I ran a few years ago - well, I'm at it again this time with SF novels.

I've picked 88 Science Fiction novels, using this list as a basis.  In that post anyone could nominate books, and everyone voted up the ones they liked.  I took most of the list into this poll, and I think it hits most the genre's high points, as well as containing several works I've never heard of, but which obviously have fans.

I've broken it down into eight groups.  Groups are set up to never include two items from the same author, and to provide a range of popular and less-popular items from the reddit post.  The first round polls will allow you to vote for as many novels as you like.  The top two from each group will go into a single elimination playoff.  It will be World Cup Soccer style, with the top item from one group facing off against the number two from another.

  • If two items are tied for first place, they'll both advance with one randomly getting the seed status.
  • If three or more are tied for first, they'll all go into a tiebreaker poll where you can only vote for one item.
  • All items that are tied for second, from ALL GROUPS, will go into a single tiebreaker poll.  So it's possible for more than two from a single group to advance.

One poll will be posted every week, lasting a week.  The polls will be posted in Gallimaufry, which has enough high traffic posts that a weekly poll won't swamp it.

I'm not going to reveal the nominees and groups in advance, but if you really want to add some nominees you can.  Keep in mind that just about everything in this page that has more than 10 points is already included.  But if your favorite isn't on there, send me an email!  It would be great if I got 8 new items to add to the list.

The first round will start next Wed, Oct 7th.

Excellent! Looking forward to it. Love this kinda stuff.

You have a link to the film poll? (or just tell me to RTFM... err... search for it myself).

Yes, Ocicat, I loved the movie poll that you did before.  Looking forward to books.  And I may find some to add to my reading list.

I'm hoping to get some good discussion about the various books going in the threads...

As for the film poll, it's spread over nearly a year of the Gallimaufry forums from the early days.  Use the search widget for film poll, that will turn up a lot of it.

the film poll was awesome.
glad this kind of thing is starting up again.

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?

Yup - didn't always agree with the film poll, but it was always fun and exposed me to some new stuff. Looking forward to the new poll!

I don't suppose the 1989 Hugo winner Cyteen is in the poll?

Ah.  Well, not that I expect it to survive past whatever round it first appears in, but ... cool.  :)

Figured I'd mention, for the record, that the polls have moved over to the new Polling Place area of the boards.

Here's a link to the sixth week of the poll
