Science Fiction Discussion / Re: Anyone else see Ender's Game?

« Last post by kenaanna on May 13, 2024, 02:49:43 AM »

Solid analysis of the Ender's Game film! I agree with a lot of your takes - the pacing improvements, making Bonzo short, and cutting down the battle sequences were all good calls. Bummer about not having the Formic queen voice though, that would have been a cool addition. And I'm with you on keeping the personal politics separate from critiquing the actual work. Looking forward to hearing what others thought about the movie adaptation!

Just a link for those who have not read Vonnegut's The Big Space Fuck.

A very short story by KV that’s unusually profane. Originally written and published in Harlan Ellison’s anthology Again, Dangerous Visions

Ok. So I've been dreaming about zombies for like a couple of weeks already. I'm usually afraid of zombies or the zombie apocalypse but in my dreams I actually looked badass. But, anyone knows any meaning behind this or is it just my subconscious looking for the next season of TWD? doodle baseball

perhaps due to the fear of zombies and the zombie apocalypse so you will dream about zombies, this is very normal so don't worry.

Science Fiction Discussion / Re: Severance!

Better Call Saul is damn good, but it's not for everyone.

Most TV I have seen in the past 20 years is plot and effect driven. A lot of its appeal depends on shocking viewers with plot twists (few of which actually surprise), car chases and CGI violence. To some extent, the actors are presented as a product. The sitcoms more and more are cartoonish and rely on short quips that are more often than not obvious, crude and (to me) unfunny. This is why programs that take different approaches stand out so much, and why there are so few of them.

It's not just harder to carry off a drama that doesn't check off the usual boxes because it's complicated. You have to raise millions to produce a show, all with no guarantee it will be a hit. It must be extraordinarily hard to pitch shows that aren't like every other and fight the pressures to make your show like every other. People who do actually carry it off deserve a lot of respect, even if what they've produced doesn't appeal to the "general audience."
