Just heard about this site, freerice.com, where you can test your vocabulary.  The difference is that for every correct answer you give they donate enough money to the UN Food Program to pay 20 grains of rice.  Yesterday they donated over 350,000,000 grains.  It adds up.  The whole thing is financed by ads that show up under the question.  They're very subtle and aren't annoying.

I'm at level 42 right now, but I stopped to come here and post this.

What level have you reached?

I couldn't get past 36.   ???  And here I thought I had a decent vocabulary.

Do they have one of these where you can donate to the NRA instead of the UN?

Those who would sacrifice liberty for safety deserve neither.

The NRA gets all the money it needs from Colt and Smtih & Wesson.  They don't need any help.

When I took a try at it last week, I got up to 41.  I had to force myself to stop because I had to get some work done.

Couldn't crack 46, but racked up 3400 grains!  w00t!

Attention began to wander, though, and I dropped down to level 40... I did find it ironic that "mendicancy" appeared twice on a quiz designed to aid the needy.  What are they implying?   ???

I can get up to 44 before my miss/hit ratio becomes such that I stop progressing.

As a linguist, I found the "philology = linguistics" entry a bit misleading since the two terms are normally used to describe considerably different approaches to the study of language. It's sort of like if you had "anthropology = sociology" or something like that.

There were a few like that, I noticed; but like the SAT, it is multiple choice, so I got most of them from context.  (My use of the word "most" probably would not pass mathematical muster, but you weren't there, so you wouldn't know, right?)

I've noticed that my score can vary by four or five points depending on whether I'm tired or not.

Nah... orgs that don't actually benefit society have no trouble raising cash.  You only have to trick folks when it comes to actually helping people.

My highest is 42.  The multiple choice helps.....probably wouldn't get quite that high if there were more choices.

That reminds me.....I should buy a rice steamer.

*cough* bump!

Just want this to be known again for those who have not heard of it.  This is such a great cause!  I mean, sure its not a permanent solution by any means, but it is such a great start!

Maybe we could start posting our scores, and offer some kind of meaningless, cost-free prize to the winners of the "highest level" and the "most rice donated" categories?  (I'd play hardest if the prize was a free Kofi mug.  :)  )

Done.
Impromptu contest:
Two prizes: Highest Score, and Most Rice Donated
Play the game: freerice.com
IM me your daily totals for how much rice you've won, and I'll post a leader board.
Send me a screen capture of your highest score, and I'll do the same.
It's on the honor system, but this is charity so that shouldn't be a problem, right?

Most Rice gets one pound of gourmet coffee and a cool coffee mug.
Highest score gets a coffee mug.
Any questions?

My best level is 46, but I hang somewhere around 42. My mom's best level is 49! (Of course, she's been an editor for more than two decades, and edited all kinds of textbooks, including medical texts.  I think that helps.)  They say there are 55 levels! You can set the game to keep track of your high score and rice totals, and it's a good idea to do that before you get addicted to this game.  I found out too late, and had to fight to win back my high score to prove it to anyone.

Thanks for that!  (It's the "Options" tab at the top of the page, in case anyone has trouble finding it.)

I have brushed lightly against level 49, myself, but haven't been able to get above 47 since setting the memory.  :(

Arrrgh.
6,140 grains of rice and I'm still stuck at 53, since about 2,000 grains ago.
My first error was a level 48 word, at 640 grains.

The price of rice is now three-fold what it was last year.  The Haiti government has fallen (not that it was strong in the first place), because of food riots.  Unicef and the WFP are asking for donations so that they can keep millions from starving to death.  If your donations budget is already taken up, take some time to increase your vocabulary.  Every little bit helps.

Do they have one of these where you can donate to the NRA instead of the UN?

What would the NRA do with all that rice, anyway?
